Default Would this program be recommended?

I was just curious if Vegas is any good? It looks pretty basic and simple but does it compare to others?

Sony Vagas 7 is a good product reputated very stable and has sufficient editing functions
There is one draw back with Vegas even 7 concerning work flow . If for example you cut some seconds of video upon editing , the whole video will be rendered (no proxy ) and this is a problem even if you have a high speed newest pc. If you dont do much video editing its OK but if yes then you have to buy separately Well known ConnectHD that takes care of that

Some other solution exist but are much more expensive like Avid and Canopus products

Cheaper solutions : Ulead VideoStudio 10 plus , Pinnacle Studio and new Adobe Premiere Elements . Ulead product do smart rendering (good for old not very powerfull computers)

its an excellent product, the encoders they are use are also top class.
Easy to use and produce professional encoding but just lack effects and transitions.

Vegas 7 is one of the best most stable video editing programs I have used on a PC. I would download the trial version from Sony's website and check it out. The program is very easy to use as well.

What about audio? Would I need a seperate program or does vegas work well for that as well?

The Vegas software actually started life as an audio editing program and organically grew to being a full Audio/Video NLE.

Most of the reviews I have read make mention of and praise it's extensive audio capabilities when compared with other NLE programs.

While I do not claim to have a great knoweldge of audio editing, I am yet to find it lacking in any audio function.

Vegas is the only soft I was able to launch and start editing without reading any kind of doc. Very intuitive, the codecs are good. Tried premiere and others...vegas in my favorite.
