HD MiniDV tape necessary? - Techwatch: Satellite TV forums, FTA, Cable, Hardware, & Tech forums

I'm planning to buy a HC7 one of these days. But I wonder if I should use the special and costly HD tapes? Or can I simply use the standard MiniDV tapes to record HD?

Sony Premium (red package) seems to be the consensus for all HD applications. It is a standard mini DV tape that should cost about $3 USD a pop. People report using these tapes in their XL-H1's and other expensive hi-def cams. I've heard of some people using them in HC7s with no dropouts and exactly the same quality/performance/stability as HD tapes.

agree, Sony Premium are good. I've been using it for almost one year now on my HC1( not one drop)

HDR-HC7 is under way from Insight- should show up Friday. Will post vids when I get it.
