Has anyone got any advice for choosing an external microphone for a camcorder? I realize that the type of microphone depends on the application. I guess what I am really trying to find out is if some manufacturers have a reputation for making more reliable/robust products than others...

the rode videomic, I don't have it myself but I am considering buying it given the very good feedback I heard on it. If you are ok listening to some french, there is a test video on these adress which shows the use with microphone, without it and with or without manual sound settings as well.

Rode videonmics a amaizing. Mono shotgun and streovideomic. Low noise an very naturall sound balance.
