Im really leaning toward getting this camera as it has unrivaled picture q in the price bracket. Also I believe that AVCHD will take some time to mature to HDV levels. Someone correct me if Im wrong here.

AVCHD is a standard so what you have now is as much as your going to get. There is not much room to improve on it unless they come out with a different standard like AVCHD2. Right now HDV is the best standard for consumer HD cameras.

I agree the camera is not much to look at but, take a good look at the latest Sony cameras they look worst to me.

I got my HV20 a couple of weeks ago. Some notes:
I find the zoom toggle to be just fine. It is a little bit easy to hit by accident, but it is very controllable.

The motor does make almost as much noise as the one in the Elura 100 I had before, but the HV20 lets you adjust the mic sensitivity very easily, so it's pretty simple to drop the sensitivity so you don't pick up the motor.

QUESTION for those of you with the HV20: in low light (and approaching low light) I see vertical stripes in the image. They're clear enough to see on the camera's LCD screen. Anyone else's HV20 (or other camcorder) do this?I don't remember my Elura 100 doing it.

Bright light image quality is ridiculously good with this camcorder. Truly stunning images.

As for build quality, yeah it's a little bit light for its size, but I picked up some of the newer Sony's recently and they felt similarly light to me. I got used to the HV20's feel pretty fast. The switches and buttons all feel pretty solid. I don't think the button positions are very ergonomic. I sometimes feel like I'm stretching a bit to find the right button (including the record button).
