Default General questions and SONY HRV - V1

Hello members.

First off, I found it rather strange when I joined to be required to post 3 posts before I could download a video clip. I certainly want to post - no problem. And in time I will post more that 3, I am sure!

I am new into video, having said that I have had a camcorder for many years and like many I would guess, use it on very rare occasions. Recently I bought a TRV 900E. This has revived my interest. As a result of playing, testing, and enjoying filming has lead me to the Sony HRV - V1. Yet a search reveals nothing in the forums. Am I doing something wrong? As there must be some comments somewhere on this new camcorder?

The HRV-V1 interests me. Bearing in mind the second hand cost of the TRV 900 compared to the HRV-V1. How much better quality will the HRV-V1 give. Will it knock me out compared to the very good quality of the TRV 900? I have a Sony 40" HDV LCD - V2000 with HDMI input.

Regarding the TRV 900. I find it gives quite good video, much better quality than my old Digital 9 camcorder. But in order to get the best quality I find that I need to shoot most video in manual. Auto seems to be over exposed by more than a stop most of the time.

I am quite happy in manual, being a photographer, but having to be continually adjusting make it quite hard work.

Are the top notch camcorders like the HRV- V1 and Z1 better at controlling the camera in Auto? Again, bearing in mind I am not pro filmmaker and just want a good quality camera that produces good quality video without too much manual work.

I trust some members will be able to advise me.

Just an amateur comment:
TRV 900E is the old generation SD cam if am not wrong even if its 3 cdd
HRV-V1 is hdand once you tasted hd then you would not want to look back
Have seen footage of F7 (less professional V1 I think) and the quality is incredible

It's not strange, it's wired.
Regarding camcorders:
It's a tough one. From one hand you can't compare TRV900 to V1 or Z1, SD to HD. HD is 4X (so the price between trv900 and V, Z1) resolution of SD, but, it all depends on what you're planning to do with your video...
Not a lot of people right now have HDV compatible DVD burners and players, the format itself is not clear by now, is it gonna be Toshiba HDDVD or SONY BlueRAY? So the only way you can enjoy HDV is plug your HD camcorder to the back of your HDTV, or play it on your PC.So you won't be able to burn DVD, If you want to post your HD video on the WEB it'll be a huge file and it'll take a long time to upload, and to buy a HD cam. and shoot in SD or downconvet HD video doesn't really make a lot of sense.
You buy HD camcorder today and by the time when HD TVs and DVD players will be in every home your camcorder will be obsolete.
But from the other hand the latest HDV cams. footage even downconverted to SD looks very nice (no better though than SD cams. in the same price range)
So it's your call, go to the stores, try as many cmcorders as you can, shoot 2-3 min. on every single one, bring footage home, put them side by side on your PC and make desision!
Good luck!
Oh yeah, don't forget to let us know about your choice and sure upload some clips!

Thank you Paramon. I'd almost given up on anybody replying to my post. I really did expect to have some replies to my post on the 4th March! And thought there would have at least been some comments on my mention of '3 posts' before I could download a video clip. I mean, a new member, looking to buy a new camcorder, wants to check it out now not weeks later! The lack of replies with advice, help, interest in a new member, did surprise me. My experience in other forums it the opposite of this forum where there seems to be a lack of interest.

At the time of my post I was seriously considering placing an order for V1. If I had been give some positive information confirming the V1 was the way to go I would have placed an order for one.

I agree with all you say. In the past weeks I have got a much better understanding of High Def video. And, I have decided to hang on for a while. I have had more experience now with the Sony TVR900e. What an amazing little camera this is. I have spent time getting to understand the manual settings The video from this camera is quite remarkable bearing in mind it's a 1999 model! Video from the 900e on my 40" Sony LCD V2000 is good.

So for the time being I will stick with the TVR900e. In my part of the world there are no camera shops offering better quality camcorders. So any chance of trying cameras as you suggest is pretty remote.

Thank you for your advise.

The issue is not TVR900e looking good on your 40" Sony LCD V2000 , but what more you could get with hd cam if compared side by side footage.
More your display is big, more the difference hd versus sd will be obvious.

I use hd ready pana ptax100 projector connected laptop computer with hdmi output (my cam is a simple sony hd HC1) and wont look back to sd any more
