Default External Microphones

Hi, guys. I plan to buy the HV20 in the near future because I want to film a web series, with the episodes being around 20 minutes each. I want it to look professional and judging by the video quality of the HV20, I won't be disappointed.

However, I think the thing that separates amateur videos from good videos is the sound quality and that's why I want to set up an external microphone as a boom. My question is if you connect an external microphone through the MIC input (not the shoe), will the on-board mic be disabled? My concern is that if the on-board mic is disabled, then the external microphone will only record in mono. Also, is it possible to connect the DM-50 shotgun microphone (to the shoe) and an external microphone and have them both recording at the same time? Thanks.

Hi,
Canon do a top mount stereo ZOOM shotgun style mic to go with the HV20 .. it plugs into the top hot shoe.
This gives you the best of both worlds .... and most importantly, the mic is matched to the input requirements of the camcorder, complete with the internal attenuator option.

It's a nce camcorder .. I love mine :-))

V Best wishes

If you're using an EXTERNAL mic, then use the Beachtek converter allows you to plug TWO mikes into the sterero mini jack socket ...so you'd still have stereo ..and yes .. it does disable the internal mic.
Only the XL H1 allows you to have external two channel audio recording AS WELL as the internal stereo mic. It has true 4 channel sound ...interestingly the HV-20 supports this 4 channel sound mode, but in playback only.

You could use two radio mics and a twin mono to stereo adaptor lead to plug into the external mic socket, then you'd have your two channels for stereo and separate balancing in the edit suite.

The manual option for level control is in the menu .. so you can set your radio mic sound to be claenly recorded rather than compressed.

Lots of possibilites for such a tiny camcorder

V Best wishes

Hy!
What do you think about Canon MA-300 xlr adaptor? Is it possible to connect this to the HV20 shoe? Or it's just good for xl and xm camcorders?

I think anything serious from Sennheiser will do the trick.
