The next iteration of high-definition digital video technology based on the Blu-Ray standard will be coming soon to a store near you, now that the Blu-Ray Disc Association has finalized the format.
ADVERTISEMENT Blu-Ray backers announced late last week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas that they are poised to initiate licensing for BD-ROM and BD-R technology, enabling both content providers and equipment manufacturers to begin rolling out an array of Blu-Ray Disc products. Specifications have been approved both for the Blu-Ray Disc single-layer (25 GB) and dual-layer (50 GB) formats. With the completion of these specs, consumers can expect to see Blu-Ray content hit the market in the coming months. New Products Coming Soon Some 20 companies are preparing to introduce Blu-Ray Disc products, including players, recorders, high-definition computer drives, recordable media and PC applications, and some 100 movie and music titles. "The completion of these specifications is an important step because it removes the final barrier to launching products based on the Blu-Ray format," said Andy Parsons, senior vice president of product development at Pioneer and spokesperson for the Blu-Ray Disc Association. Those products are expected by the second quarter of 2006, he added. |
