Default Discovery joins Sky's HDTV lineup

A new 24-hour network from Discovery has been confirmed as the final addition to Sky's initial HDTV lineup.

Discovery HD promises to "bring audiences even closer to their world with breathtaking imagery and panoramic detail", offering content from the broadcaster's extensive HD library as well as specially-commissioned programmes. Shows on the slate include Sunrise Earth and Atlas while feature-length presentations include Leopard Son, Alien Planet and Journey to the Centre of the Earth.

"Sky HD will offer the best picture quality available and the addition of Discovery HD to the portfolio will enable viewers to be transported into the amazing environments featured on the channel, "said Brian Sullivan, director of customer products and services at Sky. "Discovery HD will complete our initial channel line up for the launch of Sky HD later this year."

Dan Brooke, UK General Manager of Discovery Networks Europe, added: "The universal appeal and relevance of the Discovery brand combined with the company's extensive library of visually compelling high-definition content make Discovery HD the ultimate television-viewing experience. As the leading provider of high-definition networks in the world, we are committed to investing in HD content both regionally and across the globe."

Other channels in Sky's HD lineup include Artsworld HD, Sky Sports HD, Sky One HD, Sky Box Office HD, Sky Movies 9 HD, Sky Movies 10 HD and National Geographic HD. The service is expected to launch within the next few months.
