The number of Freeview set-top boxes and TVs in the UK may have passed the 10 million mark after a bumper Christmas when around a million units were shifted, according to comments made by Stephen Carter, the chief executive of Ofcom.

Ofcom's last official figures for digital TV take-up, published last month, showed that at the end of September there were 8,914,800 Freeview receivers in the marketplace, many of them for second and third TV sets.

It seems that by the summer, the number of freeview boxes will exceed the number of Sky/+ boxes.
