Default newbie , your advice on what system...

hi all,

after 4 years of being a regular sky customer, i'm now ready to give there ppv the elbow.

i'll keep the free to air channels, and possibly the football.

i've just spent the last 3 weeks on the net, looking at various systems fixed ,motorised etc.. different equipment

technomate,echostar,humax,manhattan plaza etc., theres also

embedded viaccess, conax, irederto, nagravision cryptoworks, to cut a long story short a lot to take in ,

in a relative short amount of time.

i'm looking for a system, hopefully the one dish which will give me, sat afternoon prem football, and the midweek from abroad.

i'm happy for this to be either free to air or the option to insert a card.

also does the art channels also show our sky games, e.g sun football, sky ppv and the monday night football game.

and i'd also like to get fa cup games from abroad also, i noticed the bolton v west ham game was screened last week but none of my local pubs had the game.

but on the listings it was televised on sky calcio, supersport 3 etc ( i hope this doesn't in fringe your rules, my apologies 1st post).

and possibly nasn europe or any other channel which shows the nfl during the season.

which comes from abroad..

if i can't get the sky package from abroad, i'll keep the digidish.

after all what i've read, i was gonna plump for a motorised system a technomate va 7765 receiver ,with cam and card slots or a technomate 1500 super ci, .

am i right in having the option for cam and card slots, case the patched receiver becomes out of date.

is either one of these boxes suitable for my needs?

any help or pointers on this will be much appreciated,

many thanks..

Hello m8, and welcome to satellitehelp.

Yeah, it sure looks a minefield when you start wading in doesn't it?

Don't worry though. It looks like you have it pretty much sussed.

The Technomate boxes are pretty good. Good value for money too. The other boxes you mention are OK as well, but I think the 1500 CI+ has the edge on both build/video/audio quality and 'after-market' support at the moment.

What you say about having a CI slot and card reader as backup should the patches dry up or no longer work is very true also. There are no guarantees in the dodgy-satellite world. All you can do is weigh up the odds, and stay as flexible as you can.

ART shows much of the Premiership, but nowhere near all. Some other providers are open at the moment including TPS and Digital+, so between them, you could watch every game without resorting to either ART or the similar card 'DigitAlb' on 16E.

Dunno about NFL or anything else, but FA cup, carling cup, Champions League etc. can be found all over the sky, even if it's on a live OB feed (you wont get the OB stuff on the Technomate though).

Forget the internal CAM's. More flexible to add something like a Dragon CAM in the CI slot if everything goes black on the patch.

Stick with the patch first though, as it costs nothing.

Onto dishes, I would advise leaving your sky dish where it is and connected to your digibox. Put up a second dish of at least 80cm on a Moteck SG2100A or Stab HH120 DiSEqC motor. Why? If you don't have a dish pointed at 28.2E plugged into your Sky digibox at all times, you can miss either a 'keep-alive' message to your card, and/or miss a digibox firmware/EPG update. Not worth messing about with.

Hope this helps.

Not actually sure what extra the 'Super' has (err, or I've forgotten ops but it is the more recent version so keep that in mind when shopping and comparing prices. One of our Google-ad sponsors had them for £109 if I remember correctly.

Yes, they're all covered somewhere. TPS covers 95% of the Premiership. No English audio though, but you'll have to get used to that like the rest of us. You don't even notice it after a while. If you want to buy an official subscription to any of those packages, then they are all available to buy in the UK.

Have a look in the footie section for a link to LJ's, and you'll see exactly what's shown where and when.

Sure, go ahead.

I'll be posting our guide to DiSEqC motor installations in the next few days (along with one or two other how-to's and FAQ's etc.) so pop back soon.

I personally wouldn't touch that. Completely unknown support prospects for the receiver, unknown dish, cr@p LNB, rubbish cable probably, and totally unsuitable wall mount (you can't adjust it, which is going to make installing a nightmare).

Spend the extra and get the named stuff that we list in our beginners section. Your getting some excellent value for money stuff anyway. It's not worth cutting any more corners. Just go for some proven beginners kit.
