Default Receiving 13E 19E 28E in Edinburgh

well after much consideration over "non dishes" in one of my earlier posts ive now given up on this idea - i think it will limit my fun too much.

So really my option is a clear dish ontop of a tower in the apartments i live in - still to clear that with property factors but i think ill be able to argue my way in to that.

couple of questions though - had a nosey already but cant find the answers - or at least ones i understand!!

to receive all the above mentioned satellite signals - this can be done with 1 dish (60-80cm?) with a quad lnb in a static position. is that right? what sort of angle would i be looking it if its possible?

like ive said ive had a good nosey at the forums and recommendations so i think a technomate is in order.. with regards to patching.. what is "the patch"? what does it specifically unlock? i know theres cams thatll unlock all sorts but the socalled "patch" everyone goes on about - what does it do?

oh and one last quickie - is there and fundamental differences between solid, mesh and clear dishes (apart from the obvious materials)?

cheers guys

You might get away with it on a 90cm dish. Take a look at the Raven Gemini G90 here:

http://www.raven.co.uk/satellite-products/G-90.htm

It's 28.2E that might cause you problems as it quite a way off the other two. I'm sure I've heard of it being done on that dish though. Maybe an email to Raven to confirm? They make a special multi-LNB arm for that dish.

It not, then a toroidal dish would certainly do it. Have a look at the Wave Frontier T90 here:

http://www.multilnbdish.com/

Not sure of suppliers in the UK, you'll have to check.

A quad LNB is not what you want. That's to take the signal from one satellite and split it via four cables to four receivers, all on the same satellite. A twin LNB is the same but with two receivers. A quattro is something else again. I'll not bother explaining it here, but again, no good.

You need three single LNB's, one for each satellite, or possibly a monobloc (will do 'Astra1' and Hotbird) and an extra single for 'Astra2'.

The patch does the same as a Multi-CAM, only via software inside the receiver.

Dish construction? Not a lot of difference really. Just go for a good performer based on recommendation.

HTH

You should get away with something like this:

_http://www.satcure.com/tech/page9.htm

Put the prime focus on 13E, as its marginally the weakest here in Scotland, (although I think this traditional info may need to be updated once Hottie 7A is in place and the older birds have been pensioned off)

Or one of the Triax TD88 3 or 4 LNB kits... You might as well have 16E as well!

They have them at Satellite Superstore, here: http://www.satellitesuperstore.com/fixed-dishes.htm

They also have some 85cm clear dishes here too if you can find a multi-LNB holder for them. Email them, they are normally very good with advice and support.

Actually, I don't know of a polycarb dish larger than 85cms.

I think that'll be OK though. It's not just the size that's important. There are other factors which affect performance - size is just the biggest one.

If you go for some suitable matched LNB's like the one's included in some of those kits, I think you'll be fine, but there are no guarantees of course.

Will you be the only user of this dish? If it turns into a communal system it could get quite complicated (and expensive...)

You should get away with an 85, although the 90 will give you extra rain fade protection.

You might struggle to get a clear dish much bigger than 85cm - there isnt any market for them. Once you get up towards a meter, they are an eyesore and probably better painted to blend in with the scenary

If you mount a four-way DiSEqC switch by the dish, you'll still only have one coax to run. :spite:
