Default Dreambox 8000 - First look ;)

OK, first off you need to take this story with a pinch of salt, as Dream are sooo slow to announce details to the public, and you can be sure it will be released long after it's planned. Having said that, the site's not complete without the obligatory DM8000 stuff

Spec. likely to change due to the fact that it's wrong in the first place!

Dreambox - DM8000

The Dreambox DM8000 will have a 723 MHz IBM processor, and come with 2 CI slots and 2 integrated card
readers. It will also have an internal DVD drive (recordable? :? ) and space for an HDD of between 80 and 300GB.
It may be that the HDD is on some kind of removable caddy system.

The 8000 will support multiple HDTV standards, including MPEG4/H.264 - that to be implemented by Sky in the UK!

An improved power supply unit is included which will finally solve all previous PSU-related problems for good .

A USB 2 port is also included as well as the standard RS232 serial port and Fast Ethernet port (no Gigabit )

It looks like the front of the box will house a multi-function (10) card reader so that you can easily load/access data, photos, mp3 etc.

The LCD display has increased in size to 3,5x 5.5 cm.

Naturally Linux is still the operating system, however it will be packaged in an 'easier to use form'. We can only guess that means a complete re-write of Enigma.

These details are still very sketchy. More news as we find it out

Specifications:

Tuner: Twin tuner (optional card)
O/S: Linux (open source)
Video connections: DVI, HDMI
Supported video standards: MPEG2, MPEG4/H.264 & WM9 (HDTV compliant)
CPU: 723MHz IBM
Memory (RAM): 128 Mb
Flash Memory: 32 Mb
Network: 100 MBit full duplex Ethernet interface
MiniPCI slot
Super cool display (RGB color adjustable)
Drives: Slimline DVD player (optional) HDD (optional)
2 x CI, with eject button
2 x Smartcard reader & 1 SIM card reader (internal)
Multiple layer 3D menu (16 milion colors)
USB 2.0

It will have to be a very good price to sell and why 2 CI slots, I cant even find a use for one these days.
I did see this spec about 18 months ago so as you say a pinch of salt is recommended.

The only benefit I see is a HD display ability.

Its nice to see a blue display again. Does it mean my old 7000s is back in fashion?

Did it ever go out of fashion?

I think the blue-screen 7000's have a bit of a cult status...

The 8000 is supposed to have a display you can set to whatever colour your want - fantastic! :

I'd rather have Gigabit, I must say. And SATA. And built-in wireless. Tea-making facilities would be good too.

I'd buy one for just for the HDTV output, and I don't care how much it costs! Whatever it is, it's not enough! :roflmao:

Hi Stick,

Any further news on DB8000?

Is it worth buying Humax HDCI2000 if DB is not going to be out soon?

Thank you.

Don't hold your breath on the DM8000 front. Dream are notoriously bad at filling the shelves with large numbers of receivers on time, and they haven't even officially acknowledged its existence yet!

I think that the Humax is the most credible box thus far, but there will be a heap of new models announced within the next few months. I'll be waiting until the dust settles before spending that sort of money.

I'll probably just end up with a Sky HD box until a decent 'third-party' STB has proved itself in the marketplace.

Well, I got my wish for a SATA drive interface, but no Gigabit.

Four tuners makes up for it though!

It's the latest super-fast networking standard which is 1024 megabits per second (Mbps)
