The Netherlands will be the first country in Europe to switch off analogue terrestrial television, the government said on Friday.

The main three Dutch public television stations as well as regional stations are already broadcast for free in digital and commercial stations will soon follow, the government said in a statement.

Analogue broadcasts will stop on Oct. 30. Only about 222,000 households still use the technology and they will need to buy a decoder for the digital broadcasts or switch to satellite or cable TV.
