Default Brutal Newbie Question

Ugh!!

Trying to help a friend sort out his DB 500s. Every image I load has a rolling screen and I can barely make out the choices. Apparently due to default format not being NTSC. How do others (in NTSC-land) get by this ?

Many thanks

Hi

Can't test out which TV formats my Dreambox (7000) supports at the moment as the family are apparently watching TV or something (?!?!?) but have you tried FTPing into the box and changing the format remotely? I believe that the default IP address is 192.168.0.24, but it also has DHCP enabled IIRC.

When you say the web interface, are you refering to the one that one uses with the picture of the remote control ? I have tried playing with that but it seems a bit problimatic. Is what I am seeing really what I should be seeing (the roling screen) ? I would of thought that right out of the box there would of been not only a way to avoid this but at least clear and explicit commentary on how to deal with it. That is why I am wondering if I am doing something wrong...

I will retry the web interface, thanks for reminding me of that !

Hi Bigold,
I don't know if you are aware of it but the 2 gether team have a NTSC default image for the DM500.

You can find the Stormbreaker image at
http://www.imagix.se/forums/download.php?view.139
There may be other NTSC default images but I am not aware of them.

Super, many thanks for telling me about that image. I will try it out soon.

Also, don't most/many of the images have DHCP turned off by default ? Seems to me I have seen that but I will try again on some images that I have.

Thanks again all for the help.

I'm pretty sure DHCP is on by default on the base Enigma images. At least on the 7000, so I can't imagine the 500 will be any different.

I say this because I don't use DHCP, and I have to turn it off whenever I load a new flash image.

Yes, I meant use the 'virtual remote' to alter the video setup.

You could also modify the configuration files yourself and FTP them back to the box. The details are posted here somewhere. I'll have a dig for you and post the file name

Yeah, here it is:

http://www.satellitehelp.co.uk/forum...hp?topic=313.0

The config file is here: /var/tuxbox/config/enigma/config

There is a section in the file that looks like it controls everything you want (but I haven't tested it)

u:/elitedvb/network/dns=3ef1a2c8
u:/elitedvb/network/gateway=c0a80001
u:/elitedvb/network/ip=c0a80096
u:/elitedvb/network/netmask=ffffff00
u:/elitedvb/video/colorformat=00000002
u:/elitedvb/video/disableWSS=00000000
u:/elitedvb/video/pin8=00000002
u:/elitedvb/video/tvsystem=00000001
u:/elitedvb/video/vcr_switching=00000000

and

i:/elitedvb/network/connectionType=00000000
i:/elitedvb/network/dosetup=00000001
i:/elitedvb/network/samba=00000001
i:/elitedvb/network/usedhcp=00000000
i:/elitedvb/network/webifport=00000050
i:/elitedvb/system/bootCount=00000010
i:/elitedvb/video/pin8=00000000
i:/elitedvb/wizards/diseqc=00000001

Which shows my DHCP turned off.

The IP address above breaks down thus:

c0a80096

c0 a8 00 96

with each octet converted to dec

c0 = 192
a8 = 168
00 = 0
96 = 150

Hence IP = 192.168.0.150

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get on.

I have to say that I'm a bit surprised that a PAL output on an NTSC TV gives a rolling picture, but you'd probably have a better idea than me. It think an NTSC image on a PAL TV gives a black and white picture, though most PAL TV's also handle NTSC properly these days.

Um...doesn't PAL work at 50Hz whereas NTSC works at 60Hz - hence rolling picture? TVs used to sync to the mains which is 50Hz here and 60Hz in America hence the difference. Most tvs bought (in Europe anyway) since the late 80s should have a chip in them that can sync to any frequency, hence they no longer have a "roll" knob because they don't get a frequencey mismatch from slightly dodgy mains electricity any more. The colour change is a sub carrier, so it may also be in black and white.

Can I use the word "hence" any more often? ops:

Just a thought. Could be wrong. Frequently am.

Well, you clearly know your frequency synchronisation from your sub-carriers, hence, we'll let you get away with as many hences as you like
