With all this talk about the DB 8000S, I would like to know who else thinks the bells and whistles are unneccessary.

My first choice would be for something like the DB7000s or DB 7025s complete with HD capability and the ability to fit a hard drive if required. I dont want a dvd burner, I already have one.

People who buy the Dreambox, do so because they want an open architecture system. The specs for the 8000 appear to be aiming more for the normal people.

My 'dream Dream' would be pretty much that.

My main requirements would be first and foremost a high build quality, well researched and engineered STB running Linux which was reliable, stable, flexible and simple.

Like you, I don't want loads of other stuff bundled in there. The more stuff you chuck into a box, the more there is to go wrong. Simple.

Take everything out that isn't required and stick an interface to an external device on the back of the box. That could even apply to the hard disk too. I'd like an stand-alone Hi Def HDD recorder without a stupid Freeview tuner bundled (an HDHDD!).

But please Mr DMM, give us a decent tuner, power supply, memory size and kick-arse CPU next time!

For a box that did all that, I would happily pay £600.

The problem though is pure economics. DMM are only a small company and their future depends on shifting as many units as possible.

I think that the potential market for the Dreambox-type receivers is a very small minority of the satellite buying public. They have to jazz-it-up a bit to make it attractive to a wider audience, especially when you start comparing prices!

IMHO the DM-8000S should be a stripped-down version, and the DM-8020 should have all the junk in :spite:

Does the provisional spec. include a DVD burner, or just a player?

I really have no idea m8. The specs were translated from German (and my German isn't good!).

I think that the specification is far from set in stone. In fact it may be that someone just made it up!

Would you want a DVD recorder built into your set top box?
