Have you tried to flash the receiver?
Does the manual tell you how to perform a factory reset? Try leaving it completely unplugged from the mains for 24 hours. If you still have a problem, post back here and I'll have a scout around for you. If nothing else can explain it, then maybe it was caused by a failed OTA (Over The Air) update. STICK

Thanks for your help, have been told by a few people that it is a failure of the flash chip and is a very common problem with manhattan receivers of this model. They will repair it but will charge over 60 pounds. Not what we would call good on a box only two years old.Any recommendations for a replacement to use on a motorised 1m dish (dc motor) gratefully received.thanks again

A replacement receiver with a 36V positioner built in?
These are pretty hard to come by these days, and your choice will be severely limited. My advice would be to buy a VBOX II and then have your pick of any receiver with DiSEqC 1.2. What do you want the receiver to do other than drive the motor?

looked at topfield and technomate, both seem well specced, would use for hotbird, astra 1b etc for fta and eutelsat for Digitalb. Some reasonable offers on Dragon cam about. We did consider Dreambox but thought it might be a bit complicated for us, computer literate but not that advanced. thanks Harv-Eliz

Astra 1B??? Sorry harv-eliz, but that bird fell off air over 12 months ago.....
1C / 1E / 1F / 1G / 1H & 2C are still going, with 1KR about to replace 1C.

You would probably cope with the Dreambox just fine.
To be honest, if used at a 'high' level it's no more complicated than using and programming a Dragon CAM, but if you want to get low-down and dirty, you can do that too, where a normal STB wouldn't give you that option. I assume from your first post that you have a 36V motor and not a DiSEqC motor? There are some older Topfield and Technomate receivers, as well as the Echostars that can still be found which do 36V, but they're a dying breed. Are you happy to go the VBOX route? Have you considered a receiver which you can patch in much the same way as a CAM or card? Nearly all the modern Technomates are good for this. How much do you want to spend? Do you want a PVR recording facility? Are you interested in High Definition TV? Have a good think about what features you must have, what would be nice, and what you would never use, and we can narrow down our recommendations. Have a read up on the Dreamboxes at http://www.dream-multimedia-tv.de/index_eng.php. These are the best boxes you can buy, but they come at a price. As I say you shouldn't be too daunted by them if you have a logical mind and a patient approach. HTH STICK

Thanks for your replies, sorry about the astra thing my receiver puts up astra 1b - 2c on the display and we get in the habit of calling it that.spoke to the man at satellite superstore and it looks like a toss up between technomate 1500 ci+ or the manhattan plaza 450. he recommends the plaza but we were recommended the starlight(not by him) two years ago, so a bit wary. Thanks again for your help, this must be the most helpful forum we've seen

Buy the Technomate 1500 CI+ and a VBOX over the Manhattan Plaza any day of the week.
It's a no-brainer, as the Technomate can be patched to receive loads of encrypted stuff (when there's something open - today is a very black day with only a few smaller packages open but that will change soon). The Manhattans have no real standing in the satellite community any more, and consequently have very little after-market support. The 1500 is a great box. You can read lots of material on it in our Technomate section, including a magazine review. If you want PVR too, buy the Dreambox 7020 with HDD option and VBOX. You'll receive more support on these boxes than anything else available, and that's worth its weight in gold. STICK
