Turkey’s TRT bans Winnie the Pooh’s best friend from TV screen
June 18th, 2006, 11:26 UTC by Andy Turkish state broadcaster TRT has decided not to broadcast the cartoon series Winnie the Pooh because the best friend of Winnie is Piglet. Within Islam, the pig is considered an unclean animal. Programme planners at TRT discussed whether they could edit out Piglet, but decided against it because the character appears so frequently. Observers believe that this TRT decision shows that the broadcaster is beginning to move towards more Islamic programming. Turkey’s population is predominantly Islamic, but the country has a secular system. However, the current Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is the leader of the conservative religious Justice and Development Party party. (Source: ANP via Media Network weblog)

No chance for 'Babe' then.
I wonder if they like honey and marmalade sandwiches. Not together though.

Update on this story from media Network weblog:
TRT denies it has banned Winnie the Pooh June 19th, 2006, 08:44 UTC Turkish national broadcaster TRT has denied that it has decided to scrap Winnie the Pooh from its schedule, as reported yesterday. According to TRT, it has signed an exclusive rights deal to show Walt Disney material, but some of the material has not yet arrived. TRT says it plans to resume showing Winnie the Pooh in the near future, and denies that the idea of omitting Piglet was ever discussed. In fact, the series has already been shown on other channels in Turkey, and is also available on DVD.

Why am I not surprised that the initial "story" has been rubbished.
It seems that certain sections of the media, have taken up propogating these Islamaphobic false stories, which in this internet age take seconds to spread like wildfire, just to denounce and condemn the Islamic world,at every opportunity. |
