June 23rd, 2006, 08:40 UTC RTL Nederland has announced that, from 1 January 2007, its three commercial TV channels will switch to widescreen (16:9) format for all locally-produced material. At the moment, only one Dutch commercial TV station (Talpa) is producing new material in 16:9 format, although the public channels have been doing so for some time. More than half of Dutch households now have a widescreen TV set, and RTL Nederland boss Fons van Westerloo says the time has come to make the switch. Nevertheless, public broadcaster NOS declined the opportunity to broadcast the World Cup in 16:9 format, claiming that this would irritate viewers with older sets. Media Network
