Bet I have an avid audience
out there enthusiastically  partaking in my travailles with wooden boom. My Heath Robinson set up has allowed me to tune to the millimeter.Wasn't able to get any signal with shorter boom but what I have done is using my adjusters focused dish and LNB while having Tp 1138H selected. In effect getting the strongest possible signal quality for the weakest Tp. This is think could be seen as lateral thinking. Not clever, :? just an outcome of exhaustion. Is has held up for the last two days, pictures from Arte and Phoenix have been stable. Your suggestion of using Sky box with big dish and possibly faulty LNB wold be simple enough to carry out. Will try it if I loose 11836H on current FTA + big dish set up. rgds dOH |

Well, I guess that's just where your focal point is then!
You can work out the basic dish focal point, based on a prime focus arrangement. I don't know how much difference an offset boom would make, but I'm guessing it wouldn't be dramatic. If you get a chance, I'd be interested to know what your dish 'depth' is ('c' in the following example). Have a look at this: http://www.satsig.net/focal-length-parabolic-dish.htm I'll work mine out, and see how much difference there is between the math and the offset reality. STICK

Dish size 105cm X97cm and 8.7 deep. It was only ofter using the fromula for prime focus dishes that I found
any signal on my dish. I had myself been guessing a much shorter boom. The one time I had Sky dish on Astra 1 I had it connected to FTA recv. but that day both big and small dish were faultless. Thanks for diagram. rgds dOH P.S. Have you any idea when Aljazeera will start broadcasting in English.? Have emailed them but so far no answer |

Al-Jazeera International isn't now scheduled to commence until at least September this year. I guess it could be a lot longer.

Phew!
Funny old -- The story might be over don't know for sure but got the boom working at a length that is 14cm or 51/2 inches shorter than previous setting. The one thing that makes me think I'm fixed is because even though I did have up to 98% signal quality on prob Tp there was always a shake on it and it would drop off. Now it seems to be rock steady. Using the allignment prog from Al-software which has a tab on the window titled "offset antennae" I found that my dish had an ofset of 22 degrees or something, then realised dOH! that my problem had beem having the dish angled to much ( giving me a relatively smaller effective dish area ) and my too long boom was compensating by being longer and tightly angled to get a peek into the sweet area of dish. Thats my beany :? Makes sense to dOH after " see date of first post". Thanks for encouragementrgds dOH |

Hey, excellent. Glad you persisted.
It really did look too long and you weren't getting everything you could. Well done m8! BTW, I've just noticed that Al Jazeera International is currently running a promo in English on 28.2E at 11681 V 27500 ![]()
