Default A few naive newbie questions

Ok
I'm very new at this, Ive done a bit of research but its not an easy subject to get started on. Everything Ive read seems to assume a certain level of knowledge which I dont have. Anyhow Ive read between the lines and think I know what I need to do. I have a couple of questions though.
First I should say that I wont have a null modem cable till tomorrow so I cant do anything yet.

Ive downloaded the Darkman patch for my TECHNOMATE TM 1500 CI+

The patch seems to come with a programme to update keys constantly via broadband - is this necessary for everything that I can get access to or just some of it?

Should I update my receiver with the Technomate update before I load the Darkman patch?

If I do a factory reset will this remove patch i.e. If I really screw everything up can I get back to where I started?

Thanks for any help and sorry for my naivety

Neil

Hi Neil.

Some of the instructions can look a bit scary, but after you've done it a couple of times it's fine. It's just getting to that point that's hard!

The Darkman patch will completely overwrite the firmware in the receiver, so no, a factory reset won't do much in that respect.

The 'patched' version is based on the Techno firmware, but adds certain functionality. The basic firmware is 'incorporated' into the patched version, so a factory reset may still default the basic receiver options and settings. Don't have one, so I don't know for sure.

Once you load the patch though, you can't expect everything to be exactly as it was. The patchers will probably have had to make room for the extra code, but I don't know how they've done that.

To be honest m8, there is very little open at the moment, so initially you will probably be a little disappointed. The broadband thing with the Technos is to open TPS, which is a very good package on 13E. It grabs new keys off the Internet every 30 minutes (when they change).

This kind of online update is very susceptible to disruption by the provider (they can shut the offending sites down pretty quickly, and do...) so I'm not sure how slick it will be.

Similar solutions for the Dreambox and the PCI cards are pretty pants.

So, to recap - no need to apply Techno firmware update first, not sure about factory reset, but certainly won't rollback Darkman patch to original firmware, and broadband software only adds TPS, but not much else open.

If you get the flash wrong, your box could be scrap. Don't panic, be bold, but be sure you have the right patch, read all the instructions twice before starting, and don't turn off the power mid-flash!

Good luck,

STICK

Many thanks for the reply.
Not sure whether I will or wont now, I'll have to have a think.

On a seperate note Ive scanned my manual (I have a habit of losing them!) Would it be of any use?

Also do you know of an arabic news channel that broadcasts in English? Im interested in seeing how things are being reported in the middle east.

Thanks again

Ill email the manual if you want it.

Cheers

Yes please to the manual scan.

If it's not too large, perhaps you could upload it in a new thread in the Techno section? Split it over more than post if you need to. There is a 2Mb limit on upload size (each object/post).

If it's fiddly, mail it to admin'at'satellitehelp.co.uk and I'll cut it up and post it.

Cheers.

There are a few channels open, but you'll probably have enough fun with FTA for now. Personally, I'd wait until a good package opens up and then patch it. Some Cryptoworks channels are open. Have a read here to see what.

Not sure on the Arabic channel in English. Anyone know of one?
