News Corp. Chief Executive R. Murdoch may buy 49 percent of Olimpia, the holding company that controls Telecom Italia, Italian daily Il Foglio reported on Thursday, citing financial sources.
Murdoch's News Corp controls BSkyB, which runs a satellite TV service in Italy called Sky Italia. Italian diversified group Pirelli and the Benetton family group Edizione Holding would reduce their joint stake in Olimpia to 51 percent from 90 percent, the newspaper reported. Unicredit and Banca Intesa own the remaining 10 percent. On Tuesday, Pirelli and Telecom Italia Chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera said he is in "deep talks" with Murdoch to distribute content on their various platforms, which could include mobile phones and television via broadband. Spokesmen for Pirelli and Sky Italia declined to comment. Comment from News Corp. was not immediately available.
