Default Swiss Public TV begins transition from analogue to digital

On 24 July 2006 at 1245 local time, Swiss public broadcaster SRG SSR switched off the analogue TV transmitters in Tessin canton, and is now available there only in digital mode, over the air or via satellite. Thanks to a massive information campaign that began in February, the changeover has gone smoothly with minimal difficulty. Tessin is the first region of Switzerland to go all-digital, and will be followed by Engadine (Nov 2006), Suisse Romande (end of June 2007) and Deutsche Schweiz (Nov 2007). SRG SSR says it’s confident, from the experience in Tessin, that the changeover won’t pose any problems in the rest of the country.
