Ok circular polarization travels through the air in what is a circular motion - imagine a gigantic corkscrew flying towards you.

Most (*) European satellite is H/V (horizontal / vertical) Imagine a big plank fired towards you end on through the air.

The dB is a measure of received signal strength at any particular location, and a drop of 3dB just happens to be equivalent to halving the received signal..

The inefficiency of using an antenna designed for circular polarisation on a H/V signal seems to be generally taken to be more than 3dB - so you lose more than half the received signal straight away.

(*) = there is some circular, but its not relevant to most satellite reception in Europe as you need specialised kit to get it, and only a couple of fairly obscure sats use it

Is that better??

There's plenty of Ku band circular polarisation satellite TV in the States (Dish IIRC) but I wouldn't try getting your squarial in your hand luggage right now!

Now you have explained it in laymens terms i can make sense of it.

I was under the assumption that it could only be used to pick up circular polarisation signals. It never dawned on me that it could be used to pick up H/V signals. ops:

How have you got on getting digital signals on your BSB minidish? Any luck yet?

Ant idea how well the squarial will work with a DiSEqC Switch. ops:

It should work fine - its just another dish. BUT you will need to change the LO lnb frequency setting for that dish to 10770 MHz or else all your frequencies will be 170 MHz out and you will get well confused.

> I cant get bugger all with the squarial due what i think may be line of sight problems. Some one may have more luck than me as i have only limited line of sight to some satellites.

I am thinking of putting it on eBay if their is enough interest in it or turning it into an outside table to put my cool glass of beer on when summer finally comes round again.

If your interested let me know and i'll stick it on ebay, if not its going to be a table.
