Default BSB Dmac Squarial.

Well heres a blast from the past. When searching the loft of my house i found an old Philips Dmac BSB Squarial that was left by the last occupant of the house. Its still in its original box and by the looks of it it has never been installed. It was also bigger than i remember.

Anyway after the week ends near disasterous attempt to install my 80cm dish (rain and wind stopped play) i decided this afternoon to see if i could get anthing with the old squarial. :?

I used an old broomstick gaffer taped to my daughters swing in the garden to mount the squarial. It worked suprisingly well.

Guess what? I got absolutely bugger all on it. Well nothing in digital anyway. My satellite finder seemed to indicate it had a lock on a few satellites but that was about it.

Anyway its just what i thought would happen, but it was fun finding out.

I'm going to invest in the Pace MS100 analogue receiver they have in cash converters for £5 and see if i can get anything with that. If it doesn't do anything at least i can play with the analogue stuff on 19.2 before that disapears forever just like my old friend D2mac who incidentaly gave me hours of pleasure before getting switched off.

If i have no joy with it i guess i'll turn it into a drinks table or something, or maybe see if the forums higer bods will let me start a Swap Shop section so i can trade it for something else. 8) Maybe a BSB minidish. It would make quite a usefull nostalgic keepsake. I'm guessing i could possibly change the lnb on it to make it useable again.

Theres no way to change the lnb in a squarial for anything useful. Dont give up playing with it yet - the receiver was probably set for an lnb local osccilator of 9750 / 10600 Mhz. The LO frequency on my BSB minidish is 10770 - and that info took some tracking down believe me!.

Sorry i should have phrased it better. I meant changing the lnb on a BSB minidish, i'm sure its probably possible. :?

I know the only thing you can do with the squarial is to turn the plastic sheet over inside it to turn it from right hand circular polarisation to left circular polarisation. Still like i said i will play with a bit longer before i bin it.

I've found that the freq. of the squarial is 950 - 1350 MHz so that should get better results when i next get it out the box.

The neck of the squarial lnb is very narrow - a standard lnb wouldnt fit it - you would have to find one with whats probably a 20mm neck.

The squarial frequencies you quote will be the down converted ones the squarial can do from its solitary lo freq.

Heres a pic of myBSB minidish showing the strange "dildo" lnb.....

Unfortunately its pointing northwest in the pic so it doesnt pick anything up there! The second pic just about shows one of the French services on 5W.

Oh yes whilst you are searching for channels using the squarial, theres absolutely no point looking for anything that isnt on high band (above about 11700khz) This is because the BSB lnbs will not do low band. If you get that analogue receiver try the French channels on 5W or Duna on 13E. These are in range.

Yep

Perfectly normal for C band.
Note the Ku frequencies are wearing H and V polarisation though.

And that mismatch between RHC polarisation and H/V immediately gives you a signal loss of at least 3dB (thats half the signal dropped!)
