Could it possibly be a codec problem?
From what I understand there are a few reasons why you can get that error! But always because it's unable to display the video for some reason.

Generally if it cannot just tune into the channel, or the signal is very weak, you just get a black screen, and a popup box over it saying something like "Unable to recieve signal. Please switch away to another tuner".

From my experience this error indicates that the channel just does not exist. Whenever I've seen this I've gone into "mythtv-setup" and changed the Startup channel for that particular tuner the error occurred on to one that definetly does exist.

However, i've also seen it when I tried to tune into the National Geographic HD channel. Stick told me that that channel is DVB-s2 which my Skystar2 card is not capable of tuning into. So you could be correct about the codec.

I suggest you go into Mythtv-setup and change the startup channel. From memory this is on the tuner card page. Although I am at work and my memory may be faulty.

I can't remember if you have tried this, but have you tested the card/signal with dvbscan?

Make sure mythbackend is stopped first (otherwise the card will be locked).

Code:
% /etc/init.d/mythbackend stop
should work for this.

You should be able to run something like:

Code:
dvbscan -n /usr/share/dvb/dvb-s/Hotbird-19
If you need a different Diseqc switch use the "-s n" where n = 0-4

This will take a long time, but will show all the channels you can see, and give you a better idea of whether the card is setup correctly under Linux.

Cheers
Ferg

Nice one!!!!

One weakness of MythTV that I hope does get sorted at some point, is this inablity to cope when there's an issue with a channel!

One word of advice though. I would not ask about softcams in any of the MythTV forums. From what I've seen these are generally followed by torrents of abuse (well actually nicely worded requests, but that does not sound as dramatic :-)), about not associating MythTV with anything illegal!

Cheers

You can discuss it here until you're blue in the face as long as you don't post any keys or programs

I'm sure we can throw our experience behind it too. We've run with just about every known type of plugin you can imagine on both PC's and under Linux (though personally not both at the same time)

See if you can find any way of running one of the big well established emulators like Newcamd or G- box.

Ok giving up on this now have come to the decision its not worth all the hassle. Gonna carry on using progdvb in xp but only use xp for this purpose. Progdvd runs quicker and is more reliable than mythtv plus with nothing else running on xp progdvb should run quicker and smoother. Thanks for all the help, at least I got the bugger to work.

Well done m8. As you say, getting there has taught you a hell of a lot and been a challenge in itself.

AltDVB is supposed to be very stable and pretty slick. I keep meaning to try the latest incarnation but don't seem to get the time to do it. I tried a version a long time ago and found it to be very good.

I hate ProgDVB. The layout is so illogical and clunky, and it takes an age to startup/shutdown, call the motor plugin, scan a transponder (often hangs) etc.

Still, it is free!
