Default Slow Downloads

Have DSL IMB and want to download the following file http://www.archive.org/download/dn20...823-1_64kb.mp3 (file size around 27 MB) maybe on a daily basis but the speeds I'm getting are a bad joke 7 to 10kBs. I get estimated download times from 45 mins to over 1 hour. On speed test I get around 850kBs. So can anybody suggest any way to impve this.

You'll probably find that the speed you're experiencing is directly attributable to the speed of the server you're downloading from. Can you download at other sites for an hour or so at high speed?

The speed tests are quite good, but sometimes don't give an accurate reflection over a sustained download period.

The difference you're getting certainly seems to rule out a major problem at your end.

I'm just trying to download it. The download started at around 50kB/sec, but after a couple of minutes seems to have settled around 25 kB/sec - that's around 25mins to download the whole thing.

The server will balance the download speeds of all attached clients to best manage the overall load on the server, and this means that your download will get throttled back based on any number of criteria such as negotiated connection speed, IP address, ping time etc.

Are there not any mirror servers? Try at different times of the day, or just kick it off overnight.

Thanks . This is I think a 1 hour american radio show (democracynow.org) and I had plans to stick it or maybe a few of them on mp3 player for longer bus trips etc, sort of spur of the moment thing picking the most recent show or ones I'd missed on WRN. Just got the DSL last week and am a bit dissapointed that downloads can still be so slow. . Your connection is 2 or 3MB/sec I'm presuming. Havent downloaded that much yet so can't compare. Also did'nt think 27MB would be a 1 hour download.

Hmm,
I just tried it and downloaded the file at a minimum speed of 486KB/S Just over 30 seconds to download.

My system is 4 M so it seems the download speed is dependent on the traffic/demand. I picked a good time.

Bloody hell Jim, that's unreal!

I'm on a 2M connection which tests at very near it's max, so I think the theory of timing and/or other factors is proven to be the case here.

@ dohouch - It was actually quite an interesting show, so I can see why you'd want to do it. You can also be sure that you'll be the only person on the bus listening to it!

Try downloading it first thing in the morning when our transatlantic friends are all tucked up in bed.

The interesting thing about these faster speeds, now I'm up to 74KBs is that my pings times are unchanged. Ping times are consistently around 200mms so it would appear to be as stick suggested I think earlier-
