Default Does Component Video carry sound?

All of my stuff is very basic, but my neighbour hast just got a flashy 42 Sony HD LCD and DVD player. I've been helping a bit tuning in terrestrial and STB. Now I realise that my knowledge is very much last century.

1. If I use Component video to connect would I also need cables to carry sound?
2. Without going to HD sat for HD quality input, would there be a noticeable difference using component instead of SCART for normal DVD's and Analogue TV. This guy has not sat system (yet! $$$$ ).

3. There may be disadvantages in using component eg: would he loose "SMARTLINK"?
tnx

Component is just video. You will also need left and right channel sound.

I'm not an expert, but I think that yes, component video is marginally better than SCART, but SCART RGB is very close. Check to see which (if any) of the SCART sockets on the TV can do RGB, and use that for the best quality (or most regularly used) source he will be using.

The manual will tell you which are RGB capable.

Not sure what SMARTLINK can do (each manufacturer seems to have their own version) but I suspect that yes, it will possibly use some of the inter-equipment controlling facilities that pin 8 (...errr and some other stuff?!?) on SCART gives.

Again, the manual should explain exactly what SMARTLINK does, and over which cables.

At the end of the day, HDMI is the connector of choice now (and this DOES carry audio) and will effectively replace SCART in the coming years. It's better than component too.

Buy your neighbour a nice Blu-Ray DVD player and Humax HDCI-2000 HD satellite receiver for Christmas. I hate to see under-used screen technology!

Off Topic , but there is very little available in HD. Is it even possible to buy or rent DVD's in HD format.? If you don't like to see underused HD screens this set-up next door would really hurt you. In Ireland we have these , I thinks there called MMDS systems. They rebroadcast U.K. mainland TV by microwave. Well this neighbour is using the old analogue STB, the quality is a lot lower than digital satellite. I was thinking I could run about 20 feet of cable over the wall from my sky dish connect my digibox and maybe show him how much better even an FTA sat would be. Starting with HD on Sky is not cheap, box + movie or sport channels and then the extra sub for HD. I would like to borrow a fully subbed Sky HD box and connect it next door the neighbour[b] really doesn't know what he has.

Ahh, I was joking really. There is, as you say, very little available in HD.

The 'format wars' for high definition DVD are just hotting up with the Blu-ray disc going up against the HD-DVD.

... and this only really applies to America for the time being :

Satellite is where to get HD.

Sky HD is worth having (content-wise), although when viewed as a package, it's p***-takingly expensive.

There are quite a few other channels out there now, Premiere HD being probably the best alternative.

As you may know, that's been 'open' and 'shut' many times lately, but can quite reliably be viewed with something like a Daytona card ATM (and I stress ATM).
