Default Newbie with a SL65

Hi there another newbie here .First off , a great site you have here and many thanks for all the info i have found. I got my SL65 on Monday on a spur of the moment sort of buy as i knew nothing about satellite at all, but i have already got it up and running thanks to info on this site.
Only thing i will mention that may help someone else this weekend who may be trying to get there system working ,i bought the sat-finder set at the same time and on the box it shows it plugged into the IF-IN socket but on my setup this didn't work as there is no current from this socket after a lot of climbing up and down a ladder checking connections i tried it in the LBN socket and it worked fine.

Hi riche173

Well, congratulations!

We must be doing something right if you can get everything working before you make your first post!

Did you use the Lidl dish/LNB as well?
Where did you decide to point your dish and why?

That labeling does seem a bit odd, was it marked LBN or LNB? The latter would make sense. The other one I'd expect to be marked IF-out which would be used for loopthrough.

Hi
Yes i bought the full system with receiver,57cm dish, LNB and all the fixings and cable.A very good deal for £59.99, although having looked at all the postings i wish i had gone for the 80cm dish and all the separates.

I went back to lidl's yesterday to see what they had left,i got another LNB £3.99 and they had one 80cm dish left but as the wife was with me i thought I'd better not push my luck .

I started on Astra1 19,2E first but that seemed to be mostly German stations, although i didn't rescan so i could be wrong,so now i have it on Astra2 28E ,for now .

The problem i have is that our south facing wall is 10ft away from a church so i have had to get my dish up high enough to clear the church roof ,which means resting my ladder on a church windowsill, not something i want to be doing to often.

My error there ,the picture on the box shows it to IF-IN ,i plugged it to IF-OUT then to LNB in to get it working.

Still learning.

If you've not got, or never had a Sky dish or system on 28.2E then that's the place to align your dish to watch all the Free To Air channels in English. The other satellites are very interesting, but there's not that much in English across any of them FTA.

There are a few notable exceptions, including some movies (though often with subtitles), but I think you have it in the right place for now.

The smaller dish you have now will do that job quite comfortably. If you want to expand your horizons later, then it's not that expensive to upgrade.

Hi Riche173!

I was also caught out by the sat finders IF-OUT picture on the box but i did the same as you and plugged it into the lnb socket...great instructions! I'm currently still on 19.2 which I have found a decent channels watching but I was hoping that more channels would be broadcasting with more languages. It's all fun though

Hi Silentalarm
Although i set my dish to Astra2 @28.2e i did a rescan yesterday and I'm getting a good signal of Astra1 @ 19.2 as well, so maybe you could tweak your dish and get both as well.

And a question for the more experienced users ,although probably in the wrong place ,what sort of spread angle_wise should i get from a 57cm dish and would i be better of splitting the difference and setting my dish at about 24e.

The same frequencies are used on numerous satellites along the arc. You are not getting anything from 19E if your dish is pointing at 28E - its just recording the same frequencies in use on both sets of satellites.

The normal acceptance angle for a hobby dish is no more than about 2 degrees either side of the lnb.

You do get *some* overspill from off axis satellites, but you have to have offset lnb's and normally a bigger dish.

Thanks for the info Analoguesat
So when i scan for channels on my tuner, its only giving me the names of channels that are already programmed into the tuner software?
Also when i get channels with no name,is this because they have only started after the tuner was programmed or is there another reason.
As you can probaly tell i'm quite new to all this.

That's cool. We were all new once. Apart from Analoguesat of course... Allegedly!

The definition of a channel or transponder is unique on each satellite, but could be duplicated on other satellites.

Your receiver doesn't know where your dish is actually pointed.

If these details happened to exist on say, both Astra 1 AND Hotbird, your receiver will quite happily give you 'reception' under both satellite listings, although the dish hasn't moved at all!

As has been mentioned, your single LNB dish can only see one orbital location.

Hmm. Don't think I explained that very well. I'll try agin tomorrow when I'm less tired if needs be

HTH
