Hi chrisbelge,
can you please provide some more information as I am having trouble finding this channel. Is it on Astra 2, 28.2E, Astra 1D.3A,23.5E or Astra 1, 19.2 E. and can you provide the frequency.
Best wishes
Mickha

Aha!

In that case, you need to go here

Welcome to the forum Chris.

Have a read, and if subscription is for you (there's no other way to get it I'm afraid) then we'll help you pick out some hardware.

Yes I think I will have to subscribe. Now I need to choose the receiver. They recommended ASTON without specifiying the model. I don't know how it works but I guess they will send a card that I need to insert into the receiver. So I need a receiver with a card reader, right?
What receiver do you recommend? Eventually I would like to get also other packages like TPS and/or Canal SAT?

The Aston is not a receiver - it's a SECA/Mediaguard CAM which plugs into a receiver. Most multiCAMs emulate SECA 2 OK, so take your pick.

The Aston CAM is getting on a bit now, so you might be able to pick one up cheaply on eBay.

As far as taking things further in the future, all subscriptions work in pretty much the same way - using a CAM.

All that means is that you need a receiver with more than one CAM slot (AKA PCMCIA slot).

If you want to unlock channels without subscribing, you'll either need programable cards, the LATEST programable multiCAMs, a Linux based STB like the Dreambox/Relook, a PCI card for your computer, or a patchable receiver.

The choice isn't easy. We would need to know more about what you want, how much effort you want to put in, how technical you are and how much you want to spend. You probably don't know the answers to these questions yourself yet!

Have a think, have a read and ask away until you come to some sort of bottom line. We can help with all of the above solutions.

It's quite often a good idea to start with something basic and upgrade. Much of the hardware has a reasonable resale value, so you don't have to 'buy the best' just in case you might need it.

Acutally ASTON in this case is refering to the receiver. I was thinking about buying the ASTON XENA1600 which has 2 smartcard slot with 2 built-in CAM (ViaAccess and AstonCrypt (which is MEDIAGUARD 2 I believe)).
But it does not have any PCMCIA slot: is that a problem?
Can I flash it later to emulate other CAM? Is that the way it works?

Thanks

Chris.

Ahh, OK - my mistake.

Never heard of that receiver, so I don't know if it can be reflashed with firmware to support a different Conditional Access system. I think the chances of that being a reality though are tiny.

I certainly don't know of any after market or community support for that receiver.

As I said, most of the multiCAMs support SECA 2, so there is no need to tie yourself to an uncommon and inflexible (no CI slot) box.

Well, I've obviously never tried this combination or receiver, CAM and card and so can't vouch for it's validity as a complete working system, but I'm 95% sure it would work, probably be a lot cheaper, and be a whole lot more flexible with heaps of community (forum etc.) support.

Technomate TM-1500CI+ Super (around £95)
Dragon/T-Rex CAM V4.1, Matrix Revolutions, Matrix Reborn, Matrix Reloaded or the Aston CAM above - take your pick - they all support SECA 2 as do many others (£15 - £60)

Plus your card, dish, LNB, cable, bracket and odds and sods.

If you went for the Dragon V4.1, it can also be programmed to open a few other channels. If you want to be more adventurous, then you could go for the £100 T-Rex V4.5 SuperCAM. It's too new for me to tell you what it's likely to open, so I couldn't recommend that yet.

That should get you up and running fairly quickly and easily. The CAMs can be had off eBay. Some go for peanuts.

Oh, and yes - Astoncrypt is SECA 2.
