Default the roof rafter installation.

searching on e-bay i came across this as an option,

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d..._promot_widget

has anyone ever fitted one of these, could you nail it to roof or does it go underneath.

any posters rigged up there own roof system, as its a very new and good option, i could see the whole sky, pick up western sats, and get a bigger dish that the neighbours won't see(less discreet)

any thoughts or is it a bad idea....

To my mind, anything that penetrates a roof is a bad idea.

Im with Jim here. ANYTHING that goes through the roof has got to be a spectacularly bad idea UNLESS its installed by a competant professional who can ensure the rooof is waterproof after the pole has been poked through the slates.

weathering it isn't a problem, i have lead roofing experience.

just wondered if the construction of the attachment was strong enough.

it would probably be better if i made me own one out of a scaffold pole painted with red oxide paint

and some 2 inch pipe clips..

just a thought, wondered if anyone has made there own.....

If you know what you are doing that fine

Id imagine it will be big enough for any average sized dish. Why not email the seller and find out some info.

DVB Shop are well enough regarded - they banner-advertise on various sat forums so their kit must be ok or else word would soon get out.

if the pole had a weathering cowl on it I might think it a possible solution if there was no alternative wall fixing position. Without a weathering cowl, it is a complete no-no.

I spent 50 years in the building industry doing a lot of surveys and saw many companies sued because they said they could waterproof roof penetrations and they cannot do it long term.

I know very reputable installers that fit them and reckon they're OK (i.e. they would fit them properly, being reputable and all that).

I wouldn't choose one personally. If I had no other option I would only use it for a minidish, and not as it says in the advert for a 1m dish

I guess that's no kind of answer at all.

If you post a picture of the front and back of your house/roof, maybe we can come up with something else. I don't think we've been beaten yet

Assuming you have full access to your roof void, and you could definitely clamp a 2" pole inside your loft then maybe that's a possibility.

If you go from your loft floor (i.e. have six foot of pole inside the loft securely clamped top and bottom with just a meter or so protruding) and can waterproof the exit point well, then that must be an option.

The one in the advert you mention doesn't clamp much below the line of the tiles which I don't like at all. I would want the base clamped a lot lower in the loft. I'm sure you could have the pole extended downwards by any half-competent welder.

Make sure your scaffold pole is steel and not alloy - then all you've got to worry about are the planning guys.

Applicable bits of the planning 'regs'.

5. Under the revised planning regulations for dwelling houses and buildings under 15m:

* two antennas will be permitted;
* the size of the antennas will be restricted
* the larger having a maximum of 100 cm in any linear direction and 35 litres cubic capacity by volume;
* the smaller having a maximum of 60 cm and 35 litres cubic capacity by volume;
* chimney-mounted antennas will also restricted to a maximum of 60 cm and 35 litres cubic capacity by volume.
* the antennas will have certain siting restrictions:
* no antenna should protrude above the roof if the premises does not have a protruding chimney;
* if the premises has a protruding chimney, antennas may protrude up to 60 cm above the roof, or up to height of the chimney, whichever is the lower.

8. If a local planning authority considers an antenna is poorly sited and could reasonably be positioned less conspicuously, they can ask the owner to re-site the antenna at their own expense. If such a request is refused, the planning authority may then require an application for planning permission for which a charge is payable, or serve the householder with an enforcement notice requiring the siting of the antenna to be altered in a specified way.

thanks for replies gents,

jim i think they do a lead slate for the pole to go through roof,

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d..._promot_widget

looks alright, and like stick says there one looks like it nails underneath the roof batons, i'd be inclined to go from loft floor with 2-3 metres clamped inside with 2 metres above for dish.

the more i think about this idea the more i think i can achieve it.

i will try to upload some photos of current position, and see what some of the posters think....
