2" gives you plenty of structural strength. You do NOT want a dish to come adrift or snap its pole in a winter gale. You would be looking at a major insurance claim if it hit someone in the face!
Ive heard of cases where dishes have come off a wall in a gale - one is known to have demolished a greenhouse 5 miles away

Yes, I believe Maplins do them.
TLC do the nice galvanised ones, and at a price that I couldn't match elsewhere. They look really ugly if they rust, and leave horrible rust-coloured streaks down your brickwork ![]() You're welcome to the advice. That's what we do ![]() Keep us up to date with your project, and please upload some pics when you're done ![]()

Right - had a little look at the roof setup, and the neighbours roof is higher than in my previous pic. I think this would make it difficult to mount the sat nearer the side of the house, rather than at the very top of my apex Would it be possible to us the T&K brackets in a more central position & use a longer pole to secure the dish so it can be elevated up the center of the house, but secured lower down & not at the "weak" point of the apex ? Thanks again |

Yeah sure - mount it in the middle, or even on the right hand side.
Don't forget, the signal comes in from way up high - if the roof is as drawn in your second pic, that still looks OK. With the T&K you have a lot of flexibility. Start with a longer pole, have the excess hanging out the bottom of the lower clamp. You can raise or lower the pole with the dish mounted on top and find the lowest point at you can still see the whole arc. Cut off the excess when your done. There's no point having it an inch higher than it needs to be. After all, the satellites certainly aren't going to move, and unless your house is subsiding, neither is your dish ![]() STICK

If you live in an area that may have strict planning control, check out the regulations posted here http://www.satellitehelp.co.uk/forum...php?topic=16.0.
The dish must not be above the roof ridge unless there is a higher chimney. Unless there is a building near you that is higher than your house, it should not be necessary to install a dish above the house roof line. In fact it would be a bad idea because the dish would be battered by winds.

Hi mate, But if I didn;t install it above the roof line, when pointing to certain sats, it would be directly facing my roof !! You would not be able to see the dish form the front of the house - I've gone through every available locality for the dish, and that is the ONLY place I can put it to recieve the full arc of sats !! Even in the back garden, I think it would be too close to the rear of the house to get a decent signal (if any). |

Ok, if its out of sight, you probably wont have trouble from the planning people anyway.
However it will be very exposed to winds and it might be worth keeping an eye on bad weather forcasts so you can motor the dish to a safe angle.
