Default Newbie System Help !

Hi guys,

I've been considering buying one of these system set-ups for a while, and have now decided to make the plunge !!

Can you tell me if this system I'm thinking of purchasing is good:

Technomate 1500 CI+ Super (patched)
Technomate DISEQC motor
90 cm Dish
0.2 db titanimum digital LNB
Wall Bracket
20m Sat cable
Scart Lead
"How to patch" CD
1.5m Null Cable
4 x F-Plug connections
4 x raw plugs
Box of cable clips

All for the sum of £230

What do you guys think? Is it a decent set-up ?

Would I be able to get any sport/movie/adult channels with the patched box if it's kept updated ?

Still reading round the forums - I'm thinking of installing & setting up this system by myself - wise choice or not ?

Thanks for the help

Chris

Hi Chrisuk,
it is a reasonable system to begin with and will get you most of the satellites, including the main ones, Astra 1 19.2E, Hotbird 13E, and Hispasat 30W, and the price seems reasonable depending on which version of the motor is supplied and the make of the dish.
The first thing you need to work out is where you intend to install the dish, to give you clear line of sight to the satellites you want, installation isn't too difficult, providing you follow the basic rules, but it's a lot more difficult if you're 20 foot up a ladder !!!!!
The most important step is to ensure your pole is vertical, once that is correctly done, fitting and aligning the dish is usually simple, just takes a few hours.
Read the stickies, in the beginners section and also have a look in the Technomate section.
You will find a lot of help on the forum if you experience any problems.
Best wishes
Mickha

You must also remember that the channel packages open with patches change almost daily. If you are interested in Premiership footy you need to be checking out an ART subscription.

Thanks for the responses

I think I will need to install this at the rear of my house on the Apex of the roof for total clear line of sight.

My house is on a funny angle (the sky dish is at the front of the house, but at a near 90 degree angle to the wall), so putting it on the front is out of the question as it wouldn't be able to turn properly !

I've been reading up a load today, so hopefully I should be OK !!!

So you think this is a decent deal then before I buy ?

Not sure on the dish & motor though - but here a few pics that may help ??

Motor

What type of programs would I be able to watch with an updated box (i.e what does it de-crypt?)

Thanks

Not much at the moment - D+ Spain went black this morning TPS France might be ok for a week at a time if the key bundles can keep up with the changes..

SRG Switzerland should be ok, and theres a possibility of a few channels on 5E.

The Technomate motor is good. It's a Moteck SG2100 clone.

The dish is the only item that's not (at least on the face of it) top notch, but based on the quality of the rest of the kit, it's probably not rubbish either. It's a reasonably good price if it includes delivery. Average price if not.

Have a really good think as Mickha says about mounting your dish/motor. There are probably options you haven't considered. We can help you get it right first time if you post us some pictures and overlay some compass bearings.

Poor location and poor mounting are the two biggest mistakes that beginners make. Planning and methodical installation will save you more time than you can possibly imagine

Check out guide here.

Hiya stick

The above price is inc delivery (£210 kit & £20 delivery)

As for the mounting - I haven't really got many options on this front !!

As you can see from the pic below, my Sky dish is at a near 90 degree angle at the front of the house (Red arrow on pic), so mounting a 90cm dish in the same place will 1 - not get a full view of all sats 2 - look damn ugly !!

I can't mount it on the side of the house as it will be pointing the wrong way (my house is a semi, the one on the right of the pic).

The best option I can think of would be to mount it on the apex of my roof. The person I'm gonig to buy the kit from supplies a 15" wall bracket - but can supply larger one's on request. I was thinking of attaching this to the brick at the top of the apex, then mounting the dish on the verticle pole, giving it 360 degree rotation ??

Thanks for the help so far

Yes, the orientation does make it a little tricky as you say.

If your diagram is reasonably accurate, then I've mapped on a working range that your dish would ideally need to cover. There isn't much above the horizon outside of that. 42E is often regarded as the most easterly satellite of any interest for general purpose viewing, though there are a few more you could squeeze in further round. 30W is often as far as folks venture west, so that's way less than the western limit I've indicated, which is maybe 65W.

This diagram gives a good idea of where the satellites are in the sky, so you don't need anything like 360 degree coverage.

Is there any possibility you could locate your dish at the bottom of the rear garden looking toward the house? It's far easier to install and maintain a motorised dish on the ground too.

It's always hard to tell without a site visit, but no other obvious locations spring to mind. Having said that, the location you've identified at the apex isn't really suitable for fixing either. The dish could go there, but the mounts would have to be attached to the wall much lower down and a longer pole employed.

Why? Because the gable-end wall isn't really designed to withstand a significant lateral force in the UK, and I've actually seen a dish mounted in that position pull off the top 5 or so courses of bricks.

If you're going to locate your dish here, fix it to the wall with T & K brackets spaced well apart and with the top mount at least four feet (?) below the apex. You might get away with moving your dish sideways two or three feet. That way you may be able to get it a foot or two lower and it'll be more out of sight and out of the wind.

Don't forget that the satellite signal comes out of the sky at anything up to around 30 degrees in the south of the UK.

Cheers Stick

I was aiming to secure the mount on the actual brickwork itself near the top of the apex (the brickwork goes right to the top of the roof), and have the dish mounted on the extended pole (as in this diagram, but obviously the pole where the dish was to be mounted upon would be a lot longer)

I don't think I'd be able to put it in the rear garden. I have a dog (who loves eating things !!), so it would have to be mounted out of reach, & I doubt the neighbours would appreciate a huge dish at the end of their gardens !!

Ps - apologies for the dodgy pics lol
