Oh yes its secure ok. No you cant open it.

You can forget anything encoded in PowerVu. Its ultra secure. the only way to watch is to get a receiver from Scientific Atlanta, AND get it authorised in their databases. One lad on one of the other forums I frequent has just got his hands on a Power Vu box authorised for AFN on 13E. Its taken him about 2 years to track one down and cost him an arm and a leg.

Oh Bugger Just when i thought i might be able to make a bit of dosh. My American friend is missing his Yanky TV. He thinks Sky is crap aswell.

I did hope that i could sort out a dish to get the AFN stuff off either 13e or 1W. Still now that that idea gone up in smoke i'm going to have to figure something else out now.

Anybody know of any other american stuff that might be avaliable. :?

I'm hoping that i can experiment and learn some new stuff at someone elses expense here so please try and help me out. :roflmao:

Plenty of crap Yankee stuff on ABC1, Sky Onc & C4. Which is why I rarely watch them If hes that desperate for Yankee satellite TV tell him to b*gger back off Stateside. The only other way is to find some sort of streaming content.

I have seen a Scientific altlanta PowerVu box for sale on eBay before now. Does it use some sort of access card or is it the box that needs to be registered. :?

In otherwords if i purchased one how much use would it be? :?

Its the actual box that is registered. Unoess its still active (rare as hens teeth - Ive only heard of 2 or 3 being obtained active) then its an under specced fta box. You CANNOT get them reregistered as a private individual. The ONLY way to get a working one is to nick one from a cable head end, or persuade an obliging member of the Yankee military to sell you one

Are you refering to nicking one of Telewest or NTL, thats naughty!!!

I've either totally got the wrong end of the stick (No pun intended) but are you saying that the cable companies use Powervu for what i'm assuming is on the downlink side from the satellite before its re-encrypted into nagra2 before being distributed onto the cable network or am i talking a load of pants. :?

If i'm wrong why are they used on the cable head end.

I know that this is a satellite site but like i've read on this forum before somewhere :quote: You have to ask to learn :quote: and to be honest you have really got me interested in this now.

Theres actually very l;ittle encrypted into PowerVu in the skies above Europe:

PowerVu:
_http://en.kingofsat.net/find2.php?pos=&cl=&num_pays=&num_genre=&num_crypt= 10&num_standard=&ordre=freq

PowerVu+
_http://en.kingofsat.net/find2.php?pos=&cl=&num_pays=&num_genre=&num_crypt= 25&num_standard=&ordre=freq

Many of the channels are eastern European specific versions, although there some sports stuff and Spanish stuff in there too. Plus th AFN stuff too of course

PowerVu has been around a long time - it was around in analogue days. I guess as its still secure its not worth re-equipping transmission facilities with newer kit. Many of the PV receivers are rack mount type and ideal for industrial installations.

It was really the first of the ultra secure encryptions.

I think i'm getting the drift of it now. The cable companies are getting things like Discovery off Sirius rather than off Astra 2 like the rest of us mere mortals.

I know powerVu is an old encryption but it just makes me wonder why nobody has bothered to try and break the encryption. It makes me wonder even more why if its that secure why none of the other Satellite broadcasters use it instead of using the likes of Nagra or Viaccess.

I know Murdoch > doesn't use it as i'm assuming he has shares in NDS.

Its a funny world out there :roflmao:
