Default Separate satellites or altogether?

This may sound a silly question but after my success (see "Trouble with two LNBs) and after looking at Lyngsat again (and again and again), I wonder if, in all your vast experience out there, I should be treating each satellite separately.

To explain, I programmed in all frequencies at 28.2E, then at 19.2E and also at 13E so my box thinks there are three satellites, one at each location. My switch box thinks in a similar way. This worked up to now and still does, but there is more than one satellite at each location so I wonder if I should set up the name of each satellite and their respective transponders.

Would that be easier to keep track of when new channels are added, as I could simply scan the one satellite where new channels appear and leave the others untouched, whereas, at the moment when new channels are added my box just scans for everything at the position and not the particular satellite, and all sorts of stuff is added by this process at the end of the channel list?

I bow to your superior knowledge out there and look forward to some opinions.

You dont need to worry about the different individual satellites on say Hotbird or Astra 2, as they all appear as a single satellite.

I get where you're coming from, i.e. that you don't want to have to go cleaning up loads of stuff you don't need to, only a subset.

Logically, you could argue both cases here, but I'm 100% with Jim.

I'm a bit fanatical about having things organised, up to date, arranged logically and free from junk.

I like to apply this logic to everything I do.

EXCEPT satellites and computers!

I found out pretty soon, that (unless you like pain, and having to redo things umpteen times only to have them undone by some inconsiderate third party who has no idea just how long it's taken you to get everything precisely the way you like it > ) you should just relax your principles a bit sometimes.

Satellite re-scans, computer crashes, incompatible hardware, software customisations, failed data migrations and backups.

No longer. Scan everything and look past the junk. In fact, the junk gets to be quite interesting sometimes, and allows you to perform as many rescans as you like with no additional effort.

Just sort everything you have alphabetically by orbital location and train your brain to ignore the mess.

Life is soooo much simpler that way

Yep i agree with that aswell. I got really annoyed after spending hours deleting stuff only to find they reappeared when i rescanned the sats. >

Its a case of get used to it i'm afraid. :?

It is worth checking though if you receiver has a skip function on the channel guide. Its not a case of deleting it, you just tell the receiver to ignor it when you flick up and down the channels. Makes life so much more pleasant.

Just remember that not all boxes have this capability, i'm just fortunate that mine does. :roflmao:

Thanks, everyone - I'll leave things as they are. I have 28.2E in alphabetical order (for the British stuff) and 19.2E and 13E in transponder order but all satellites at each position under just the one entry. Cheers - must try to watch something now!!
