Meant to say, the help I require is just with the use of software and connecting cable from laptop to receiver

Hi kovarik

I don't know the receiver personally. I don't believe they're sold in the UK.

What is the model number of the receiver?

Do you have a loader application?

Do you have a patch which opens encrypted channels?

Does the patch allow you to update the keys via the remote control?

Is there a readme file with either the patch or the loader app?

Are you completely 100% sure that the firmware you have is for your exact receiver before you start? If it's not, it can destroy your satellite receiver!

Do you have a null modem cable, and does the receiver have a 9-pin serial socket on the back?

Does your laptop have a serial port, or is it just USB? Which laptop do you have?

Sorry for all the questions, but we need to have all these answers before we can guide you

Hi Stick,

The receiver is an Illusion M3 FTA (I think it's a chipped Spanish Free to air box - if that makes sense?)

I don't have a loader application - would that be a hex editor?

Re Patch - every so often I pay the guy who sold me the box to eneter new codes and the encrypted channels are then viewabale.

Remote Control - I believe the guy hooks up his laptop for the updates.

Readme file - I don't know as I haven't seen him actually do the updates (Problem is that now I can't get hold of him so have very few stations I can watch)

Firmware - to be honest I'm in the dark as to which software has been used before (I am quite computer savvy)

Null modem cable - pretty sure I have. Yes, the receiver has a 9 pin serail socket on it.

My Dell Inspiron 5100 does have a serial port.

Sorry if some of those answers are a bit vague. There is no card slot by the way on the receiver.

Thanks in advance,

Kovarik

The first thing you need to do is find a site with the latest patch for your reciever.
As stated above NO OTHER WILL DO.
The site will also have a piece of software called a loader (either bundled with the patch or separate).

Once you have these two make sure your cable is null modem and not just a serial lead.

Connect the cable from reciever to PC, unplug the reciever power (don't just leave it in standby)
Run the loader software and when prompted point it at the patch file.

When asked to, power up the reciever and follow the on screen intructions carefully.

PATCHING RECIEVERS CAN BE A ONCE ONLY EXPERIENCE IF YOU GET IT WRONG.

I cannot be held responsible for what you do with the above info.

Good luck chap.

Hi Lancelot - thanks for your advice.

Just one question - the patch - is that also the key update?

Yes - the patch contains the keys.
If you are able to input keys via your remote control then there is no need to go down the patch route.

OK, lots of info out there for that receiver, and it is still patchable as you know.

A hex editor is a tool to manipulate the code in a bin file as opposed to say an ASCII file. Not what you need.

A loader application is usually custom built for a given receiver (try the manufacturers site, though sometimes patches have modified loaders) and has the sole function of transferring the new firmware (patched or otherwise) to the receiver, and generally works in the way Lancelot has mentioned above.

Try and find the instructions for entering codes into your patched receiver first, as it's easier and less risky than patching itself.

Good luck.
