Just to throw a tangent in here (could turn out to be a straight line!). With the PVR and dual LNB setup in my country, we can watch two separate channels whilst recording a THIRD! How is this possible (3 signals, 2 lnbs)?

Depends if they're part of the same transport stream [off the same transponder?] - if so, the PVR could be being clever enough to take two streams from one TS and watch them, or record one/watch one. Or more than two, of course, depending on I/O load on the box.

Tripleplay UK, who make IPTV head-ends, have the ability to do this, which reduces the number of servers required for a hotel installation, for example. Also, Mythtv [www.mythtv.org] has a branch of the source code which can do this at the moment, hopefully to be merged back in sometime soon.

I posted in the forum before, but i read this again and i think i am starting to make more sense of this. Inother words, for a hotel like setup, one would need to setup 4 servers? One for each block of signals? with each machine serving whatever channels it can within that block of frequencies?

In effect yes, in practice it is done using a quattro lnb. This is simirar to a quad but has a distinct differance in that, each of the 4 lnb's is locked onto one of the 4 bands, VH VL HH HL.

That is then fed to a Multi Switch Distribution amp which will feed a number of recievers. These can be daisy chained together for any number of recievers.

The same sort of setup is used in apartments etc where the whole building is fed from one dish.

The other way hotels do it if they only want to provide a small number of chanels is to use the rf output of several boxes to provide their own in house tv package.

Hope I made that clear enough

Yeah i get it now! How much would it cost to buy a quattro lnb along with a Multi Switch Distribution amp? Are we talking about costs that would be too high for the average house?

No, they are not too expensive for the average house, it depends how many rooms you want to run and how many satellites.

Take a look on satellite superstore for some prices of multiswitches.

And just to add to this, a multiswitch will allow you to distribute terrestrial signal to a suitable diplex, triplex or quadplex wallplate as well.
Diplex, Satellite & Terrestrial o/p
Triplex, Satellite, Terrestrial & FM o/p
Quadplex, Satellite X2, Terresterial & FM o/p
Multiswitches start off with having 5 i/p, 4 for the Quatro and 1 for an Aerial.

interestingly enough, screwfix are offering a labgear multi switch for under £100, and a quattro lnb for just over £30. I reckon a rough guess for putting sat to every room in an average house, materials only, at under £300.

Yes it would make lots of mess but if anyone is having a rewire, it wouldn't add much to the final cost or mess caused. You could probably ask the sparky to run the coax for you, just leaving you to make the final connections without adding that much to the bill either.

Either that or be creative with the cable runs, its amazing just how much of it you can hide away if you think about it and plan your routes well.
