hi m8,i felt once i got a new tv it would be a joy to watch & play with.this is getting frighting on what 2 do & get.mind you if i start thinking this way we would never by anything new would we.we could start thinking beta max here as like tvs on what 1 to get.please god i get right i did then lol.i dont want 2 wait for ever before i get a tv,but i do hope i get the right 1 that will last on format side.im sure that a new tv will last longer than 3 years unless very un lucky.

There will always be something new and 'better?' around the corner so you would never get anything if you waited for it.

Sid, with all your equipment, do you really want a panel with a built in receiver? If you are using it for searching etc would you not be better of with a panel sans tuner?

Panasonic are giving 5 years warrantee from 15th of this month instead of the present 2 years.

The only good thing that sticks out in the HD-Vision write up is the guarantee that the TV is 100% pixel error free. The international agreements allow pixel errors subject to strict limitations. I assume that guarantee is time limited.

I think a 5-year warranty could be worth its weight in gold, because the failure rate of flat screens is alarmingly high and they are expensive to repair.

A friend of mine deals with a large number of these screens at his workplace, and tells me that they have had several failures. Even with the high purchase price, expensive repairs often mean that they end up in the skip.

I just wouldn't buy a LCD/plasma on its own. There's no point. If my current TV packed in tomorrow, I would get a flat screen (probably a Pioneer or Sony) plus an XBOX 360 (or wait a few months for the PS3) and an HD satellite box. I'd also get an HD DVD player next year.

Whilst you can't sit on the fence forever, for me, HD technology as a whole is one of the things that just hasn't reached a stable state. This technology rollout has shot itself in the foot and will only redeem itself when there is enough HD viewing material to keep these pixel-munching beasts fed. We're not quite there yet IMO.

Just think, some people will be taking their broken, out-of-warranty 'HD ready' TVs down the dump before they find the HD source component they want.

I'm 'ready' for when England win the World Cup, but I wouldn't stick a 'World-Cup Ready" badge on my head on the offchance that we might win it again in the next hundred years!

Hi Jim, John Lewis will give you five warranty on ALL their tellys without extra cost.
That's where my new LCD wil be purchased when the time is right!!!!!

To be honest i don't think i would bother buying one at all. Well not for the forseeable future anyway.

My brother in Law has just purchased one of these all new all singing all dancing Samsung LE40R74BDX 40" TVs for nearly £1100. All i can say is what a load of crap. The picture is awfull when used for SD tv. I can honestly say the picture is better on my 28" Cheapo nasty crappy Pacific Asda TV costing £140.

To be honest the way i see it the picture is only ever going to be as good as the recording. I would say about 99% at least of all recordings are done in SD not HD so at this momment in time i'm staying with my crappy Asda 28" thank you very much. :

If i wanted a big TV i would get one like my dad has. A Sony 57" HD CRT Projection Television like the ones they have in the pub. The picture is no where as good as a CRT but its a damn sight better than the crap you get from an LCD.

His theory is why where your glasses when you can get a bigger TV.

Yes I know. John Lewis will also do price matching as long as you can find a shop that has a pricing lable on the item and the item can be bought there and then.

Amazed that this is common knowledge, at least here. Never found the LCD screens that bad when I saw them in shops. Now I will look more carefully at what picture they are carrying. Someone suggested that it would often be cartoons, I suppose they use a restricted colour palette. Have just 2 small screens myself, and was thinking of something bigger. Now it will at the most be a flat-screen CRT.

CRT pictures are generally considered better because they are smaller. If you see a 42" CRT (if you can find one) the picture will be no better than a 42" plasma. And if the plasma is HD it will be considerably better than a crt, unless you can find a HD crt.

I think a good CRT of the same size would look noticeably better at SD resolutions. Maybe not on a still image, but definitely on faster moving images. That's the one thing I notice about flat panels, the awful ghost-trails.

Small CRT's leave small LCDs looking very sad IMO, and it's not just the poor upscaling on the larger screens that leaves them wanting. Black tones are also not very black on many flat screens too.

Only when you push an HD source through them do they shift into top gear and leave the poor old SD CRT behind.

I've never seen an HD CRT, which is a shame. Mind you, I think you would have to have a fork-lift to get a 42" CRT into your lounge!

i have a Sony Bravia HD ready 40 inch LCD screen and a telewest HD TV DRIVE and the picture in HD is crystal clear its like looking throw a window
especially watching PLANET EARTH on BBC HD
the movies are great i watched The Chronicles of Narnia in HD and the picture was amazing
i will post you a pic later
