Sony LCD KDF-E50A11E; my neighbour has all this new equipment and I find the picture quality very un-hi-definition. Its not a HD Sky box but the picture is worse than a standard TV. Sharpness is definitely not a word that would spring to mind describing the picture. Connection is SCART. The word that would spring to mind is blotchy. The picture is obviously BIG, but sharpness, definition, clarity are all lower in my opinion to a normal tube TV.
This post is a comment, but if someone can suggest some settings that can be changed to improve sharpness I would be interested to try them. Have set Sky box and TV to RGB |

Hence my comment to Sid, about LCD and SD pictures. They are not very good.
The upscaling and downscaling is not so good on LCD sets for some reason. Plasma panels made by the better makers are considerably better for SD and better for HD films. The only thing that LCD panels excel at is data from a PC where the panel does not have to do the scaling. If you go into a shop to see a LCD display, it is almost certain that they will be showing a cartoon in HD.

Seems to be a recurring theme doesn't it?
At the end of the day, you need to have an HD source to get anything as good as or better than SD looks on a CRT. Trying to word that a little better, I think it's generally accepted that a good CRT has the edge over any LCD and plasma for SD. The sooner folks can get a good selection of HD sources (HP sauces?) for their 'HD ready' screens the better. I find it frightening that people will buy a TV costing that much without checking the picture quality on SD. TBH I think many people just can't tell the difference. With all the digital technology in my lounge, every one of my family will quite happily watch analogue terrestrial TV (...and reception here sucks all year round) in the wrong screen format all day if I didn't kick off about it. : ![]()

As Stick has rightly suggested, unless you have your SKY HD box or any other Hd box connected to a HD tv via an HDMI cable and watching an HD transmission then you picture is going to look worse than on an SD transmission on a CRT tv(which is 90 % of your programmes).
A very experienced man at John Lewis categorically informed me not to touch LCD televisions for at least another year!! the only reason they have stopped selling CRT tv's is due to market pressure(once your average punter sees an LCD tv they won't look at CRT anymore - which makes sense of course) until they take it home and realise that their 20 year old tv they've just taken down the skip had a superior picture than the one they've just splashed out two grand for!! ![]() |

hi linsladeboy,iv wont chuck £2000 away lol dont worrie.germany & korea are near always ahead of us in tech.have a read of this from press Releases on .TechniSat HD-Vision 40 is the test winner! http://www.technisat.com/
1 thing i like with this there will be up-grades & of course i will check out sd onit first.the Contrast ratio: 1200:1, dynamic contrast: 5000:1.this is higher than most on the market atm.most are a 1000:1 atm this must make some difference.its like being at the rock & hard place as what 2 do atm & what to by.i will be going to places over the nexst few days just to veiw some tvs.not to by from them.once i see what i like i will by a tv.if this takes 6 weeks to find what i feel is right then so be it.or even 6 months.i will have 3 other tvs running for normal sat or free view.i now feel the need as a feedhunter for hd tv for feeds.TechniSat as to the past have mostly been ahead of most, from what iv had in the past from then iv been happy.saying this iv never use 1 of there tvs,its very hard to find what i wish to go for atm.i have been doing a fair bit of reading up,but nothing is like using first 2 see if theres pit falls.here i will add a bit about the tv from wright up in brackets. (Best picture quality The HD-Vision complies with all technical as well as legal licensing requirements to reproduce television broadcasts in accordance with the HDTV standard (HD-ready) and provides detailed images according to the test conducted by AudioVideoFoto-Bild. The strictest possible quality standards are applied during the production of the HD-Vision. To ensure the best picture results, only selective panels, known as Best Panels, are used. This means TechniSat can guarantee that each HD-Vision set will provide a picture 100% free of pixel errors. In addition, the HD-Vision 40 comes equipped with a DigitalDirekt feature. The use of an integrated multi-tuner ensures the digital input signals (from satellite, cable or terrestrial antenna) are not subjected to any digital/analogue conversion on their path through the HD-Vision to the LCD panel. Result: best possible picture quality, even with PAL signals. And the HD-Vision 40 has a special feature: it can recognise the letterbox bars associated with 16:9 format broadcasts, and zooms in to full picture size, thus obviating the need for a manual adjustment of the picture format.) so from this what do you think on its picture quality? thanks sid |

For me, the techno-babble means nothing - the only thing that counts is what it looks like!
![]() If it looks good, then I'll impress my friends with loads of jargon ![]() I'd like to think that the next generation of flat-screen technology will be a cut above what's out there right now. http://www.canon.com/technology/cano...ation/sed.html Is SED the future?

Yep, spending a couple of hundred pounds on the latest STB isn't as scary as spending a couple of thousand on a TV whose life-expectancy is probably only around 3 years
