I got this very useful info from nikot04.
You can control your tv-set using the DM remote control in the following easy to do steps. With your tv-set in use: 1.Push the “TV” button on your DM control once 2.Keep the “setup-SHIFT” button pressed until the red led of "TV" button flashes twice 3.Type the code: 9 9 1 4.Push the buttons “Power ON-OFF” and “TV” (in this sequence: first “Power ON-OFF” and then “TV” ) alternately until your tv-set switches off. You have to be patient with this step.In some cases you have to push this button combination up to 100 times. 5.When your tv-set switches off push the button “setup-SHIFT” once. With this step your remote keeps the code of your tv into the memory. PS:I had to push the buttons “Power ON-OFF” and “TV” alternatively only 8 times to program my tv

Yes, I can confirm that it works.
I'd forgotten about doing this actually. I did it the day my Dreambox arrived and it's worked fine on my old Sony TV ever since. Both the procedure and a huge list of TV codes are listed in the English DM-7000 manual on Page 47. I imagine the codes would be the same for all Dreambox remotes, not just the 7000. [Edit - I've just found a smaller version of the manual and attached it to this post]

The point about my original post was that you dont need to know the tv code. The series of key presses finds the code automatically.
Very useful for TVs that are not included in the manual lists.

I dont have a Dreambox 500 but the button may have 'shift' on it rather than setup. On mine, it says 'shift' with a small printed 'setup' just below.
