The newspaper “Expressen” reports that soccer matches from the satellite/cable channel Canal Plus are being pirated over the Internet.
The pirates are taking the broadcasts from the 24 hour pay film and sports channel and streaming them for free online using Windows Media. Anders Braf, head of security at the TV industry anti-piracy group Stop, tells the newspaper that this is the first case of its kind in Sweden. Unlike previous piracy involving illegal decoder cards, there is no precedent here to stop the unauthorized rebroadcasts. Last Thursday the top Swedish division soccer match between Stockholm’s AIK and Gothenburg was pirated from Canal Plus and streamed for free online. “Expressen” says the pirate site also planned to carry this past weekend’s English Premier League match between Arsenal and Everton as well as an Inter Milan game from Italy. While the quality of online streaming has previously not been a threat to television, with the advent of broadband the quality is approaching that of the legal broadcasts. The report comes as idg.se reports that nearly 60 percent of Swedes between 15 and 74 have broadband. One quarter of these, around 940,000 people, have watched Internet television something during the past quarter. Radio Sweden's Media Scan
