And on a side note if the EU have their way Plasma TV will be banned. A discussion on this probably requires a new thread.

Thumbs up Re: In general terms, which is better, Plasma or LCD?

There's no chance they'll ban plasma's

When both screens are setup correctly you might find that Lcd's with their backlight that is constantly on use as much energy if not more than some plasma screens

Sometimes you've got take what you hear and read in the press and certain papers with a pinch of salt.

i have a 42" panasonic and its incredible! you can pick them up for less than £600 now which makes them unbeatable.. the pioneer is still the best by a country mile but there either stopping making tv's or are about to and are 4 times the price...

What's putting you off?
I have a Pioneer for a few years and it is the best display I have seen. Mind you I haven't seen B&O and don't know anything about them.
Many of the other makes are improving fast.

Wow, that's a broad question, one which I don't believe there to be a definitive answer to. You could argue for hours about them, especially since you would have to go into LED LCD's or did you just mean LCD?

Nevertheless, each one has its advantages and disadvantages:
Plasma:
First positive, is that the name sounds cool!
They are notorious for offering inky blacks and great shadow detail.
They tend to offer the best upscaling from standard definition (480i/p) although this seems to be in the design rather than inherent of Plasmas.
First negative, They are well known for being expensive.
They suffer from screen burn (although there are easy solutions to this).
They are very thin, which can result in internal components being damaged over time due to heat, if not properly ventilated.

LCD:
First Positive, they tend to be the cheapest.
Are known for their reliability.
The LED LCD's are the most economical TV's.
Are easily the best TV's for watching regular TV shows.
First negative, there are very few good large screen (over 45 inch) LCD's.
Tend to be very bulky which makes mounting difficult.
Not great for movies or gaming as they seem to lack in the native resolution department.

Here is the article I used for some of my info, it goes into LED's too.
LCD vs LED vs Plasma

Ha, I didn't even see the date, whoops! Nevertheless, LED's should be included in the discussion of this topic now.
