Default A "do it all" system - does it exist?

I would like a system that can receive Swedish channels on Thor II at 1 degree west (I know it is Conax encrypted but I am able to get a subscription) and channels on Hotbird at 13 degrees east.

I would also like the decoder to be able to receive terrestrial freeview and to have a HDD to record programmes. It would also be nice if the decoder was HD enabled...

Am I dreaming or can this be achieved?

Hi Freddy.

I think the closest you will get with the current crop of readily available technology is the Dreambox 7025.

It can do everything except output HD directly (although it can stream HD out).

You can have 1 satellite tuner and 1 terrestrial tuner fitted, a hard disk, and it will run a Conax card (and virtually every other type of card).

Depending on where you are, the dish arrangement will vary to pick up these two sats, but it's almost certainly possible with the right sized dish.

If you can give us a rough location we can advise better.

Welcome to the forum

Yes, I think you're correct about recording HD onto the disk of the 7025. The CPU in the 7025 is definitely capable of decoding DVB-S HD (but not DVB-S2!).

Unfortunately, as it doesn't have anything other than SCART and RF out, there is no easy way to watch in HD other than pulling the files over the Ethernet connection and playing them elsewhere

hi stick, dream box wise your the man 2 me as i dont use.for scanning i have hi hopes on the new homecast receiver on the hd tv signels.if it will do the older 1080 hd & the newer hd what is expected.have a good tuner like other homecast receiver low & high sr in all formats.and lasts a good scanning speed & maybe manual fec for all the rates,i would be over the moon.i would be suprized if it had 4.2.2 but that would be nice.1 of the main reasions iv never got a dream box is there tuners are not so good.well this is what i was told.how do you find your dream box tuner?the Triple Dragon has a spectum anerlizer init what i like the thought of but, same again on the tuner side so im told.sorry to go off point here a bit.

Dreambox 7000 tuner is OK, but nothing to write home about. Some of the later ones are better, but still not top-notch.

I've heard reports that the TD tuner is a little better still, but never used one. The Relook is supposed to have the best tuner of all the Linux boxes, but there have been two or three new ones out since I last had a good look.

The Technomate Linux box looks interesting if the tuners in their other STBs are anything to go by.

hi m8 im sure our chats here will help freddy here on receivers.as you know @ some point i will be up grading myself on a tv & sat boxes.HDMI ports on a box is going to be important as what 2 by.its good to chat on all receivers & have many views on what we think is going to be best.ever if our needs might be a bit different.is there any news on when the new gen Dreamboxes are out?stick thanks on the info for Linux boxes & there tuners.i did give a bit of thought on the Relook once i think.was there not 1 like a pc dvd all built in 1,i left this at the time as i though a bit pricey.i also heard it was a bit buggy @ the time.on the tm Linux i wont go near no matter how good.i have to tms now and remotes can be a pain when both on.iv got round with to tms,but i would not with 3 tms on setup.with mpeg 4 round the corner now or on our door steps now, whats bought new should have this in.remmber the alog days when things that were good jumped to mpeg2.im sure the same will happen with mpeg4.

Yes, there are receivers with DVD drives - you can even get a mod for the older Dreamboxes to jam one into the existing case.

I don't expect to see the Dreambox DM8000 until summer 2007 at the earliest, maybe even next Christmas.

Dream just don't know what a release deadline is :

@ Fat Freddy - sorry for rambling on in your thread - I hope this helps you!

Thank you both for input, most helpful! I had given some thought to the Dreambox but then someone said it was fiendishly difficult to operate for someone who did not hava an advanced degree in computing...

Also, maybe it's just me but it does feel a little shortsighted to speng £400 odd on a box without an HD output just as it seems that HD is getting going. Perhaps I should settle in for the (long) wait for the 8000???
