Default Real Madrid Sells TV Rights For $1.4 Billion

In the most expensive television rights deal in club soccer, Real Madrid sold its TV broadcast rights to a production company for $1.41 billion over seven years.

Mediapro was the highest bidder, Real Madrid said Monday. No information was provided on rival bidders.

Earlier this year, FC Barcelona announced a similar five-year agreement of its TV rights with Mediapro for $1.28 billion.

Mediapro is a major shareholder in the new Spanish channel La Sexta, which was launched this year. Mediapro recently agreed to share local TV rights with broadcaster Sogecable SA. Spanish soccer is a key component of Sogecable's pay-TV offering Digital Plus.
