I have a unique activity at New Year. For the past 27 years I have been the Honorary Organist of Glasgow Cathedral and have been playing for a Watchnight Service there since 1979. At the stroke of midnight, the Cathedral Bell is rung 12 times to bring in the New Year.

At the same time, Glasgow City Council let off their fireworks - thousands of pounds of public money gone up in smoke and the noise is like the outbreak of World War Three!! There are thousands of people in George Square, Glasgow (look the Webcam) and they're all pie-eyed, so to speak.

First Footing is a great thing in Scotland at New Year - you are the "first foot" through the door of your friends' houses and you take a bottle of whisky, a lump of coal (traditionally) and a slice of black bun (a stodgy sort of current cake which sits in your innards like a brick). The "first foot" is the first visitor of the New Year. Much drinking goes on and then you "first foot" the next people and so on and so on .... until you're totally legless ... and that's after playing at Glasgow Cathedral but not before !!!

Well it seems like at midnight UK we will all be able to drink to diapason falling off the organ bench.

And I think this is the closest smiley to a prayer.
