Default Southern Electric Leaflet Nonsense

I received a leaflet from Southern Electric in the post this morning.

You would think they should know something about electricity wouldn't you?

They suggest some means of saving electricity, the first of which is to unplug your mobile phone charger. They state that "These little black boxes suck 100kWhrs a day from your socket, even when the phone is fully charged".

We are actually paying them to employ these muppets.

As a matter of interest I checked the maximum output of my charger and left on all the time at full load, the consumption would be 0.749 kWhrs per day. With the battery charged it would be less than 0.07 kWhrs per day

A second suggestion is that TVs, VCR's and DVD's use as much as 85% in standby mode as they do when in full use.

? Why do my dreambox, TV, Digibox and VCR all cool down when they are turned to standby? You just have to read the specifications to see why. The standy power consumption is a tiny fraction of the on load consumption.

Sky digibpoxes dont power down much - they just turn the audio and vision circuits off in standby. Its quite possible their power only drops 15% in standby.

Thats the equivalrnt of 100 1KW electric fires. Which explains why my office has been so warm the last few days

Well spotted Jim. You should write them a short note and see what they say. We could all do with a laugh.

I know the Sky boxes are still very much alive and kicking when in standby because of the continual eavesdropping for card and firmware updates, but it's Joe public who have to pay for the privilege via the electricity bill.

I also discovered to my disgust yesterday, that switching my new Thompson digibox to standby doesn't shut down the video circuitry either - it still hangs-on to control of the SCART socket on my TV.

That means I physically have to unplug the digibox from the mains to play the XBOX! >
