The smoking ban is great its really strange going into an English pub and seeing folks puffing away on their cancer sticks now.

Well, depends how you look at it. My dad's nearly 70 , been working in garages and steelworks till he retired, and now serving behind bar in miners club.
He smoked capstan for years and now rollups.
95% of punters in his club are smokers, and they all have to go outside. He'll probably get pneumonia in the future to save somebody's clothes smelling of smoke next day

My 16th-century local has turned into a poncy restaurant pub which has doubled the price of the beer. They also thought it was clever to take out the Sky TV, pool table, juke-box & sofas.

I'm happy to stand outside in the snow on the rare occaision that I have a tab. I love going into a smokey pub even if I don't have one myself, but I think it's totally unfair to make everyone else suffer so I'm OK with the ban.

I'm actually (like most smokers i know ) ok with the ban. (standing ootside I mean)
I feel sorry for the older guys lik my da, who had to endure worse conditions to make a living ( most of my da's family were miners ) who now have to abide by the pc brigade's rules. >
My point is that they should have made it compulsory for pubs to have a smoking/non-smoking area in their establishments to cater for everyone, not a complete ban!
I was in Macclesfield for a few days last year, and the feedback I got from the pubs I was in, was that in no way will it ever become legal doon sooth.
I think you guys have become more militant than us up here.
We accept everything noo as a rule!

The pub (The Archibald Simpson ) i used to frequent in Aberdeen when i lived up there now smells of Stale Beer and Puke. At least the fag smoke used to mask the Smell.

They should have allowed pubs to keep the Snugs (Smoking room) just like it was in most of the pubs in the Midlands up until the late 50's. Much better idea in my opinion.

It was a Witherspoons which could explain why it was so w**k. We only went in there because the food was cheap.

It allowed Smoking right up until the Ban as far as i'm aware. I moved back down south in 2004 before the ban came in so i'm not entirely sure. :?

My mate who still lives up there thinks the pubs smell even worse now that they did before the ban has came in.

Smoking ban for enclosed public places comes into force in England on the 1st July 2007.

As for southerners being more millitant, I don't really see it. Everyone just seems to be walking about in a punch-drunk stressed-out state. I think they would vote for anything if they could be bothered to go to the polling station.
