Default sky dish position - please help!!

hello all...

i am moving house shortly and i would like to know what postion (N,E,S,W) my dish roughly will need to point at...

i've looked at local houses and it seems they point to the south although it's difficult to tell without a compass...!!!

the reason i ask is that i really don't want the dish on the front of the house... not really bothered about looks but the tv box will be in the back and i don't want the cables running all the way throught the house... it's a terraced house so running the cable around the side isn't really an option...

the front of the house points just about east... the rear west...

hope this makes some kind of sense... any help would be most welcome...!!!

thanks

The satellite is located in space above the equator at approx 28 degrees east of south. Very roughly in the direction where the sun shines at 10am (in England), but at the present higher than where the sun appears.

thanks for the info -- by the looks of it, the dish cannot go on the back of the house... i assume if you don't have total line of sight you cannot get reception?

if anybody can figure out how to send me a private message i can send a site layout which would make things probably a lot clearer than i'm explaining..!!

thanks,

Hi misterB, welcome to the forum.

The satellite dish MUST be able to see the satellite in a direct line. The dish could be behind the house providing it is high enough or far enough back to point directly at the satellite without any obstructions.

That means it could be at the end of the garden if you are not too far north and your house isn't too high.

There are one or two posts which give diagrams to show the angles needed.

A rough location and a hand-drawn sketch of your house with compass bearings overlaid might give us a better idea. This Link will take you to a very useful utility too.

I take it you're just looking for the 'Sky' satellite. There are lots of others out there too which carry free TV. You could receive more than one on a single dish.
