Default Smooth FM swaps soul for over-50's

Ofcom has approved plans to change Smooth FM 102.2 into a radio station for the over-50s.

Owner GMG Radio requested that it replaced Smooth's soul-based daytime music policy with easy listening, more news and speech programmes that appeal to an older age group.

Smooth in London will retain 45 hours of specialist jazz programming per week in the evenings.

A 30-day public consultation was held before the watchdog gave plans the green light. One response from rival Emap asked the regulator to ensure a difference in format from its own Magic FM.

Ofcom's ruling said: "There is no station specifically for over-50s. In addition the station would have a higher proportion of speech and continue to carry its unique specialist jazz output."

Ofcom’s radio licensing committee said that the revamped station will have an obligation to ensure that at least 20% if the music played in daytime should date from before 1966.
