Default LNB Mounting

When I put th LNB into the holder should it be pushed fully forward or what?

Not neccesarily - lnb's have a small amount of adjustment in them. wiggle it backwards & forwards in the clamp until you peak the signals. If you cant be bothered or you are using very strong satellites just clamp it in the middle somewhere!

OK , I guess the focus can be varied a bit by moving it to and fro a bit.

Thinking about it, any small movement could be significant as the wavelengths in use are small and vary depending on what is being received.

Anyway, I will have a play when I find a weak sat.

Well at 10GHz wavelength is 3.0cms and at 12Ghz wavelength is 2.5cms.
Too close and the dish is under illuminated. Too far out and the dish is over illuminated and the LNB might pick up extra noise from surrounding objects.
