Default Licence fee agreement less than expected

The government has reportedly decided to go ahead with a 3% increase in the licence fee from 2007/8, and by 2% for the following three years.

The agreement is believed to have been reached between media secretary Tessa Jowell and chancellor Gordon Brown, but has yet to receive approval from the prime minister.

An official announcement will be made next year, but the speculation will come as a blow to the BBC, which had been lobbying for an increase of 1.8% above inflation, currently at 3.9%, in order to properly fund programme investment, digital switchover and its planned move of several departments to Salford near Manchester.

The licence fee is currently £131.50, and the below inflation increase would see the cost rising to £135.45 next year and nearly £150 by 2013.

If the BBC proposals were to be approved, the licence would rise to as much as £180.

A Treasury spokesman told the BBC: "Pensioners couldn't pay any more than the licence fee of £131.50. The BBC must stand on its own two feet."

Earlier this week, Jowell announced that £600 million would be set aside to help elderly people switch to digital television.

How about asking us for a change :? It makes my blood boil to think were paying for the sort of crap that the BBC churn out > I dont even watch BBC yet i'm still expected to pay for it.

Make them run adverts like every other TV company

With the exception of Top Gear theres nob all else worth watching IMHO.

I think that some of the home grown stuff on the BBC is good. I also think that having a couple of channels where you can escape from the putrid bile-inducing adverts is great.

I only watch a little bit of BBC stuff - Dr Who and the odd drama, but my Mum loves it

I also use the website an awful lot.

I think the licence fee has had it's day though. I think it should be scrapped, and funded directly by the Government. It's just another tax anyhow.

Stick it on Income Tax. At least it's effectively means-tested then.

Or stick it on petrol. Everything else is!
